Just got my third in as many days form letter of the format below (identifying information redacted):
quote:

From: REDACTED
Dated: 10/16/13 7:28 PM
Whats up? Just getting a second to sit down at the computer, havent had much luck here so far so Ive been poking around other sites too. I wanna chat more with you tho if u got some time. Im not sure Ill keep checking messages here but if you want to chat more get me at REDACTED on h-0-t m a i |,I'll get ur message there on my cell and can get back pretty much right away. Tell me what you would do if we got some alone time together...? Cant wait!

Just curious what goes through your mind when you receive these in your collarme email as to what these people are after?

For me, this "personal note" conjures up the image of a slobbery guy chewing cigars while wearing nothing bug gym shorts sitting down at the computer hacking away at the keyboard with fat fingers impersonating women who can neither spell, punctuate, nor complete a word, yet, somehow, they're very interested in little ole' me.

And, the fast response, is probably a Nigerian mailbot, triggered to wait a few minutes before bouncing back the punch line.

Is that what my mind was supposed to conjure up when I was to read their posts?
What are they after anyway?

The fact I get these letters intimates that they must be working on someone. But, what are they actually after? I've already blocked the sender on receipt of that missive - but - I ask what you think these types of letters are after, and, why anyone would fall for it in the first place?

Cyber sex, or else the conversation will eventually turn into a request for money.

And people fall for it because they are desperate and/or don't know much about the internet.

This is clearly a man's style of writing. You are a male sub. Women of whatever ilk (Dominant, switch, sub/slave) don't go around contacting male subs out of the blue to fraternize with them. When I was newly arrived on CM, I uncharacteristically once contacted a male sub to compliment him on having a fine (non-fetish/kink) profile I had seen pop up on homepage, and to ask a question on what his artistic avatar represented. I've never done that since. Btw, we have become good on-line friends, and we like to exchange (non-erotic) poetry. A singular and exceedingly rare occurrence.

Hit the report as spam button. Because clearly that's what they are.

I'm not trying to discourage you from starting threads. However, I think it would be to your benefit to read the page on the following link before you do. http://www.collarme.com/personals/scammers.htm

The site really does provide a ton of information on the subject.

That page was informative.
I was wondering why the spammer bothered to give me a hotmail address, since Collarme would have worked just as well. The note at the bottom of your explanatory page covered it well, so I'll heed that advice:
quote:

Scammers will often try to take your conversation with them off the site quickly, often including their email address in the first message they send to you. The safest approach is to keep your conversations with unfamiliar users within the messaging system until you know them better.

This section also covered it well, but my antenna was already up for that one since the profile photo was of a gorgeous babe:
quote:

Another scammer favorite is to post a picture of a woman who looks like a fashion model with a profile that describes how she wants a lifetime of no-limits slavery, etc. These scammers will often describe their current situation in equally bizarre, over-the-top terms.

All in all, that was good advice. Thanks for referring me to that. We probably should delete this thread if it is merely a duplicate.

Thanks. I did that. And will do that in the future. Dunno if it works, or if it does anything, but, I guess it's like the FLAG button in Craigslist where they remove a post if it gets a certain volume per hour (not a total volume, but a frequency rate exceeding a set limit).

I think they were trying to sound like a kid, which, makes no sense when responding to a pentagenarian.

Sigh. Yes. I realize that. We men are the kings of the world in many places, but not when it comes to women. :)

That they're eventually looking for money is probably the most apropos answer, although, for the life of me, I can't see anyone falling for it.

Please understand that I am trying to be patient and it's not My strong suit.

In the simplest terms, right now, My dear, you are what is known as scam bait. You have created a profile in the last sixty days, which put you on the "newest users" list. (Also known as fresh pickings/new meat list, according to gender.) You are middle aged, therefore are probably in a better financial position than the younger persons who join the site. This also makes you less likely to be aware of various ways that people will try to take advantage of you. Most likely, you have no experience in BDSM, are not connected with your local kink community, and even the scammers know more about this life than you do. You have probably checked the "submissive" box, even though you have little to no experience in it. You may or may not be in the midst of a mid-life crises. (Bonus for those attempting to get money from you because, even though you aren't dating the "hot, young chicks" in the vanilla world, somehow, you think being kinky will change that.)

At least 90% of what is hitting your mailbox is either a crock or an attempt to get you to spend money in some way. It's going to improve a great deal come 12/02. You'll still get the occasional note from the 'hot chick' who is gambling on the fact that you don't know any better. Most of the time, unless you do better, your inbox will be filled with cobwebs.

Harsh? Maybe. It's still rather realistic. You shouldn't need to ask when it comes to the majority of the stuff that hits your email. Ask yourself a serious question. When was the last time you dated a woman in her twenties?

I do comment on sub's profiles if something catches my eye: a cool quote, a nice picture.

Exactly! Whenever I get an email here from somebody who has obviously not read my profile and is not commenting about something I've posted on the boards, that's what I do.
