Is it safe to use bamboo canes from the garden centre for caning?

as long as they're cleaned first - we often use them. The other issue is that they aren't usually as supple as 'proper' canes because they are a bit dried out. They can break when you use them which may cause cuts. But if you're not worried about that, then enjoy yourself [:)]

Bamboo is a grass and in the far east they use different kinds of grass for caning. I would guess it depends on the local variety they have in stock? So yes, I suppose Bamboo can be used. I wouldn't use it myself however since bamboo tend to splinter. Rattan is my personal choice and I recommend it for caning.

Thank you for the replies so far. I have no idea of the variety, they don't get any more specific than bamboo.

Bamboo is stiff and often hollow, rattan is more solid and flexible. Koboo rattan is probably a good choice if you're new to caning. But yeah, for light caning you'll probably be fine with the garden variety bamboo sticks. Just check for cracks, you don't want them coming apart on you.

They tend to get splintery, and I don't like the aesthetic as much. You could probably reduce the risk of splintering if you sanded and varnished them before use, but I've never done that before.

I myself prefer a good leather riding crop, they sting like crazy and leave the most delicious marks!

I dont like bamboo, if you really get into the rut, splintering is bad gamboo. I would personally for woods, much prefer the select birch dowels. They are cheap enough you can get a big bundle, and destroy as many as you wish without great damage to your pocketbook.

Get a length of PEX pipe at the hardware store. It comes in blue or red. Takes a while to get it to straighten out, but it will never break or splinter and the 1/2" size stings like mofo.

I got My first experience swinging a cane while using fresh cut bamboo. Green I found leaves worse welts than brown, and surprisingly the dried up bamboo was still able to be used for a while longer. I honestly prefer fresh bamboo canes over any other!

Check out your local farm supply store usually in the tack section you can find crops, slappers and those long stiff training whips that leave such awesome welts.

I've broken so many bamboo canes on they boy's butt that I don't use them anymore. He worked in a garden center, and brought home many circumferences. They were artfully made and beautiful to look at; he taped the tops as ergonomic comfortable handles. Even the fattest broke eventually, so I've given up on them. Personally, my favorites are long, stingy riding crops and short, thuddy riding bats (shorter and thicker than crops), both available in farm supply or equestrian venues.

i am not sure what it is called it is stiff to the end and has about a 2 to 3 inch line on the end i have seen them used to exercise horses while on a lead rope to run them in circles to check their gait i would assume.

I used to have to go outside naked and pick a nice switch off a tree. Old school switching leaves delisious marks!
