TieMeInKnottss -> ER pain charts (10/20/2013 11:40:16 PM)

In ER...apparently I need emergency surgery...but of course got to find the surgeon, pump me full of antibiotics AND make sure they have all my insurance info.... Here since 6, now 2:30....my definition of emergency surgery must be different then theirs and what do I keep thinking....

How do I explain that their pain chart REALLY does not work for me? They keep telling me I should be in a lot more pain...
How much is this costing?

And yes I am slightly loopy from drugs

Awww. I'm sorry you're going through this. I hope your surgery is successful and you feel lots better soon. (even *if* you don't feel bad enough for the doctors!)

LadyPact -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 1:44:20 AM)

I hope you are going to be ok. We'll be thinking about you.

MissImmortalPain -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 1:51:40 AM)

I am sorry to hear you are in the hospital and hope at this point things are going better for you. I don't care much for how hospitals rate pain either and the only thing I can suggest is to try to give them an example of how it feels. If they get it they do and if they don't there really isn't much you can do about it.
Thoughts will be with your a speedy recovery.

Waiting in a hospital can seem so long. There is just nothing to do to help you pass the time. Hopefully the surgery will happen very soon and then you can work on feeling better.

I hope everything goes well, and I agree the ER pain charts are screwed up.

ShaharThorne -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 4:55:08 AM)

Tell them that it is at the warp speed of 10....

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 5:01:23 AM)

Tons of great healing mojo coming your way, TMIK.

I hope the surgery goes well and you have a swift recovery.

DarkSteven -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 6:39:33 AM)

Geez. Good luck.

TieMeInKnottss -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 8:19:47 AM)

I have now informed them that the pain could potentially be a 0 if people would stop pushing my abs & saying "does this hurt?"....

ShaharThorne -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 8:26:10 AM)

appendix or gallbladder?

Just think of all the interesting things you're going to say when they give you the anesthesia [:D]
Best of luck and a speedy recovery.

If she goes "I am into needleplay" the nurses will laugh...

Yes, I have the same problem with pain charts. You need to give them context.

http://www.webmd.com/pain-management/chronic-pain-11/pain-scale?page=2

"I ask people to remember the worst pain they've ever experienced in their lives," Savage tells WebMD. "It might be a kidney stone or childbirth. That level of pain becomes the benchmark to which we compare the current pain."

This!

You will kind of have to use your imagination to fit your pain into kalikshama's scale.

I had my gallbladder evicted on emergency orders.
It was horrible pain and Morphine didn't touch it.
Dilaudid did... and it hit my brain in less than 30 seconds.
I wasn't just loopy; I was in another solar system.
I was much better (pain-wise) post surgery.

I am keeping you in good thoughts.

Jewelcrafter -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 9:35:01 AM)

Yeah, the pain charts are really poor. The worse pain I ever had forced my body to pump so much endorphins that I went immediately into a high and could not stop laughing. I honestly don't remember if I even felt pain because I was so high. Another time when I had to have surgery the doctor just looked at me and said, "This doesn't hurt?" I asked if he was doing something because I could only feel a little pressure. He was basically touching my bone.

They really need to figure out some other way to measure a persons pain because we are all different with different levels of pain tolerances.

I hope everything goes well and wish you a quick recovery.

calamitysandra -> RE: ER pain charts (10/21/2013 12:00:02 PM)

I hope your surgery goes well, and the recovery will be speedy and easy.

Maybe this modification to the painchart helps.

appendix or gallbladder?

Every time I've been in the hospital, way more than anyone should unfortunately, some surgical resident comes around every day and pokes me in the right lower abs. It's like they're hoping I developed appendicitis overnight.

To the op, tell them it hurts a lot and they'll give you the good pain meds. Then you won't mind the wait or much of anything else for a while.
