Loved this shot of comet ISON that showed up in the news feeds today! I'm hoping for a heck of a show.

Dammit! Let's try a smaller version.

A few weeks back, I read somewhere that once ISON got closer, the astronomers could predict whether it would be visible during the day. Any update?

TheHeretic -> RE: Cool comet pic (10/21/2013 10:28:32 PM)

There was a lot of speculation when it was discovered, but the article I grabbed the picture from pointed out that they are notoriously hard to predict. A few weeks ago, it was reported that it had broken up, and was going to be a nothing, then this is released.

Assuming it holds together, it will start appearing in the pre-dawn sky in the coming weeks, and after sunset from Thanksgiving until a bit after Christmas. It could still fizzle, or it might be spectacular.

What a neat pic...I just watched a special on PBS today and it is going go around the sun on 11/28/13....The documentary has said only one comet that was visible and went around the sun as close has survived the heat and gravity of the sun and they are wondering if this one will survive.....I will be looking online to see what the status is on that day...I learned a lot about comets from watching that show!

I didn't watch it from the beginning but rather from the middle of the show and found it online if anyone else wants to watch. I will be watching the first 30 minutes I missed too.

It may not have survived it's trip around the sun.

From reports of a silent demise, to new speculation that it ain't dead after all.

It's always nice when scientists are able to admit they really don't know yet.
