Eh, I just follow a recipe unless I know it's going to be too much for our smaller crockpot.

A recipe.... for a crockpot?????????

A crock pot is just an electrically heated stew pot!
You don't need a recipe for it - it's just a cooking pot.
It's like having a recipe for a frying pan.... it's a freakin frying pan ffs!

As Pyro said - you just throw bits in it until it's full up and leave it to cook.

I am subscribed to a bunch of slow cooker blogs.....Just Google "slow cooker blogs" and you can find them all..that way you can subscribe to their blogs and get emails every so often..mostly daily from people who slow cook all the time...I only do it 3-5 times a year but like having all those recipes coming in and sparking my imagination.

Corned beef is just made for crock pot cooking. The grocery even sells a brisket with the seasoning included.

Pot roast is another thing that is great done in a crock pot... chuck roast, a bit of beef soup base, onions, carrots, a bit of garlic, some potatoes, and slow cook while at work.

You can make great applesauce in the crock pot: put in your peeled cored apples, you don't need to cut them small, add cinnamon (or other sweet spices) if you wish and leave it on low for overnight.

If you prefer apple butter then just put it on warm when you are at the apple sauce stage...at day's end you will have apple butter.

I have sometimes made apple-pear sauce.

Sometimes I add raisins at the start for a nice change... and sometimes I soak said raisins in a bit of rum first.

Mmmm, apple butter...how long does it keep in the frig?

Here's a recipe: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/all-day-apple-butter/detail.aspx?src=VD_Summary

Also, allrecipes has tons of crock pot recipes: http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Everyday-Cooking/Slow-Cooker/Main.aspx

angelikaJ -> RE: Crock Pot Virgin (10/28/2013 8:53:18 AM)

It keeps a long time... at least it has for me.

A crock put is the cat's meow for clarifying your honey and bringing up to bacteria killing temperature prior to making mead.

Winter Harvest Soup

An easy, delicious soup that is pure comfort food. Can be made vegan by using vegetable stock and leaving out the butter, but won't be as creamy or flavorful. Coconut cream can be substituted for butter (I use Trader Joe's in a can.) The skins left on the peppers and apples bring a beautiful color and help thicken the soup. Even if you're not a tofu fan, its use here is undetectable and provides vegetable protein and a creamy taste instead of using regular cream. This makes a lot; it freezes well. You can also 1/2 the recipe.

4 medium size butternut squash, baked, seeds removed, peeled, cubed
3 Quarts double-strength chicken stock
1.5 stick butter (6 oz)
2 Red bell peppers, seeded but not peeled
1 large onion
10 cloves garlic
1 tsp. curry powder
1 12 oz pkg. tofu steak, drained (Hinochi has the most neutral taste, I think)
salt/pepper to taste
2 Fuji apples, cored but not peeled

Throw everything but tofu in the pot and simmer until it's all falling apart. Blend until smooth in the pot with stick blender. Add some of the soup to the tofu and blend w/stick blender until smooth and creamy, pour back into soup and simmer down on low heat to desired thickness, stirring frequently.

The half-recipe would probably fit into your crockpot. If not, quarter it. I usually use a giant stock-pot because I only want to make it once.

Tonight I made this substituting one 14 oz can Trader Joe's Coconut cream for the butter. It was rich, delicious, and vegan (except for the chicken stock.) Another pinch or two of curry power gave it a nice carribean flavor that was still clean, refreshing, filling, and just sweet enough from the apples. Yum. Most of it's gone in the freeer for nights when I just don't want to fuss for something healthy and home made. I can heat up in the micro and serve withwhole grain toast in front of a fire place for a cozy meal.

I basically made this with Korean pears and apples tonight! You are reading my mind... scary! (I often use a rice cooker for the same thing. However, it cooks faster and hotter and has to be watched more closely, but I'm cool with that).

Yes. I make gorgeous , healthy , amazing scented soap.
No reason to have an ugly slab of soap just because it's handmade.

Bring on the perv...I can handle it
Jag churn inte smör men. Jag gör bara tvål.

This is a bit of a hi-jack, but would you post a recipe, please? I'd love one.

Then I'd have a great excuse to get a new crock pot so I can dedicate my current one to soap.

mnottertail -> RE: Crock Pot Virgin (10/30/2013 7:39:36 AM)

Hey, maybe we need a soapmaking thread, and maybe it should be in recipes, so it doesnt go away so easily.

Whadda ya say largest BDSM community on the planet? Is soap kinky?

mnottertail -> RE: Crock Pot Virgin (10/30/2013 7:41:43 AM)

I also want to say that I have been fighting an urge to put the title of this thread, crock pot virgin into verse and set it to the tune of cat scratch fever.

As you may be able to subtly discern, I am starting to lose that battle.

Sure. I have been doing it so long::..give me a minute to write it down and find the links to buy the supplies.
It's fabulously fun. It's like cooking and art and chemistry.

Keep an eye out for a new thread.
