Nope. That's because I was offline for four days myself due to a particularly malevolent virus. No one even noticed me missing >sniffle< either. I'll just assume it's because everyone here sees me as a man of mystery, an enigma cloaked in secrecy and smothered in secret sauce...Yeah, that's it, that's the ticket...

If I don't see someone for a while I just figure its likely one of two reasons.. either they have something much better to spend their time doing (in which case, good for them!),.. or.. they were very, very bad and got mod slapped hard..

Wish that were the case. And in the second scenario, doesn't that usually mean you see posts and replies that say [Awaiting Approval] for a couple days after mod-slappage? And didn't mean to steal your thunder, Gary. And I know you missed me, littleone.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone ever really do something when a regular or semi-regular poster drops out of sight?

you were exorcising your computer, I think that's a good use of your time.. perhaps frustrating but obviously eventually successful (in a David vs Goliath sorta way)..

Yes, some people do post regardless knowing their posts wont be seen (except by the mods?).. but I expect some don't if they are told they will be banned from viewable posts for a certain time period.. posting with awaiting approval just advertises that you were very bad and are being forced to sit in the online corner with an online dunce hat on..

I expect some people do email each other privately if they have become online buds.. you do see some posts if someone has had a situation where forum support/well wishes help, at least emotionally.. Unless I knew someone very well, I personally would not want to intrude on their privacy if someone drops out.. I am not a nosy person.. (well, except for the twitching nosey on my cute mouse avatar)..

I only ask that because of something I was on the periphery of a few years back. On the firearms board I used to go to before it died, there was a semi-regular who suddenly dropped out. He wasn't a power-poster, but seemed well known (I'd just joined the site). Turns out he was a widower who was estranged from his family, went to his hunting cabin, and had a massive heart attack. By sheer coincidence, one of the regulars knew someone who'd actually gone hunting with him, and taking a stab in the dark, asked him to take a ride by his place. He found him.

That's kind of the reason I asked, seeing as some of the folks here have health issues and/or participate in some borderline risky behaviors.

Oh, and the time away from the computer was quite productive, I might say. I intend on repeating this in the near future when I can manage it. I got a lot of work around this place done, took care of some winter preps at the GF's, and in general had a good time living in the pre-Internet era. During those four days, I was online for eighteen minutes at the library and that was pretty much handling my (vanilla) e-mails.

Oh, and gary, sorry for 'jacking your thread again...

In My case, they did. I've had a couple of instances where I dropped out of sight or there was irregular activity coming from My account where people stood up and inquired what in the world was going on. DarkSteven had been known to call/text if he thinks something is not right/is not OK. There were members of the staff that tried to contact Me when I went to the hospital a couple of years back. I've even had folks who tried to contact others in My local area to inquire if they would "swing by" to check on Me if I suddenly dropped off of the grid.

I've learned to tell folks (when possible) that I won't be around. It saves them the worry.

Nope. Cannot say I have. Never heard of you actually.

Then again, I've not been around much the last few months.

La Tigresse, I find your honesty refreshing !

How can someone be smothered in sunglasses? It'd be like a ball pit with edges.

Funny thing about those, I didn't wear them to anonymize myself, I wear 'em daily-daily because I'm a bit light-sensitive and my kitchen tends to get lit like a soundstage during the day.

I know. I was hoping you'd share the secret. It seems so obvious now, though, that you'd preserve the mystery. Why, oh why, didn't I see that coming??

I imagine the light sensitivity is a pretty big pain in the ass. Do you have a preferred brand of sunglasses?

So as to avoid drift: Welcome back, boys!

For daily wear I prefer the ones you can buy at Harbor Freight for a couple bucks. They're UV-A & UV-B rated, conform to OSHA specs for impact resistance, and they stay on my head when I kick 'em back. They're cheap enough I can buy them in quantity and if they get lost or broken I'm not wailing and gnashing my teeth. For my Sunday go-to-meetin' shades I have a couple pairs of Ray-Ban Predators and Wayfarers, but at nearly 80 bucks a copy, they tend to dwell inside hard cases most of the time. And the sensitivity is an issue. It wasn't bad before the surgery, but afterwards it became something of a pain to deal with.

Actually, I did.

However now that I think I have perfected the satellite targeting system, it might be easier not to....

Now if I could just figure out how to keep the boston cream pies from burning up during re entry, my new weapon system will be perfect.

What would be even better is if I could recruit enough clowns for my organization so that non suicidal clown pie throwers could start a whole new form of terrorism.

In that case, I am unforgettable, I have the most oddball brain configuration in the known galaxy. How many other people do you know that wants to splat people with boston cream pies from orbit?

Jeff, how is the work coming on your PENIS? (Pie Entry Nullification of Immolation System, duh...)

I know it's still the early stages, but do you have any promising leads?
