FatDomDaddy -> Community colleges cut adjunct hours to avoid Obamacare (10/28/2013 6:51:24 AM)

Wait.... but they're teachers!!!

And Community Colleges already have a delay in their mandate!

"Adjuncts weren't all expecting to secure health benefits from the schools under Obamacare — but they didn't expect to suffer what amounts to a pay cut, either." Bwahahahhahhahahah.... maybe because they WERE NOT LISTENING!

The 2014 Congressional are going to be a hoot.

Reading the story of course, reveals that this is nothing new, and the only way it is related to Obamacare is in the rantings of a Tea Party politician... no big surprise there.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: Community colleges cut adjunct hours to avoid Obamacare (10/28/2013 7:39:34 PM)

No.... it's not related at all.... lol

Adjunct professors are normally part-time workers. Why would an employer cut a part-time worker's hours when they already didn't have to cover them?

Well, first you would have to share the apparently widespread belief that the evil Obama has a time machine, and caused the cap on hours to occur years ago, as part of his diabolical plan to shove Romneycare down everyone's throat...

The way it was explained to me is the part time worked can't average over 32 hours. In the facility we visited their part time employees usually worked more than that and they had to cut back their hours so in the end they didn't go over the average. As far as I know this only effects places that have more than 50 employees.

Sure, that's true, because somebody who usually works, say 36 hours/week is not really "part time" by any reasonable use of the word. Employers just call them that to avoid having to pay benefits, and have been doing so for many years.

But adjunct professors usually only teach 1-2 classes a term, compared with the 4-5 classes of a full-time professor. It's not even close to a full-time job for them.

That's really the entire point of having adjunct professors - they can hire some people (oftentimes local scientists, businesspeople, artists, etc - ETA: but also often they're qualified PhDs that can't get a full-time position and have to adjunct at 3 different colleges or do some other work on the side just to pay the bills) to teach a class here and there without having to pay them the salary or benefits that a full-time professor would demand. It's a cost-cutting measure that has nothing to do with the ACA and everything to do with unions and cheap administrators and the fact that there are more qualified graduates than there are jobs for them.

OP, I hope you realize that ADJUNCT professors are by definition part time.

You got this from another one of those breathless wingnut websites didn't you?

Because under ACA, they will over time (have to cover them) and the scale that's used, lowers over time and....you have to have already been hiring (and employing) staff at a certain set of hours for a (currently) established period (which is changing by the hour), ergo, all businesses (including, by the way, govt. funded ones....such as colleges) are managing their staff now to adequately compensate for any changes that (surreptitiously) change at midnight next Thursday because smart employers have figured out the cost and are then therefore, doing those things necessary to stay competitive.

And...in business.

Welcome to the new part time "full employment" world.

All of you who voted for it...get ready to have 3 jobs :

(It's a beautiful world....ain't it?)

Please restate that in plain English, because I have no idea what you just said. Certain set of hours, certain established period, serreptitious midnight changes to the law, what?

Do you really, seriously, think that an employer is going to start being required to provide insurance for an employee that works <10 hours a week for only half the year?

this is johnny-cum-lately. ask thishereboi about TAFE classes her Antipodean counterparts relied upon for education and/or employment.
