I should probably borrow my alien abductee cousin's tin foil had before getting on this particular soap box but it is one of those things that makes you go, "Hmmmm"

Have you ever noticed that retailers tend to really push extended warrantees.
All you have to do is bring in your receipt.

But, the cheap printer ink on all their receipts fades to illegible in about three months.....

... Returning the tin foil hat...

We've started asking if we need to save the receipt or if it will be in their computer. If they don't save it so just giving my phone number will access it, we buy elsewhere.

I scan important documents and gmail the pic to myself so that I can always retrieve a copy from gmail.

What's a receipt?

I can't say I've ever had a receipt fade over time unless it was sitting in the sun, got wet or was someplace that made it fade. If I know it's a receipt on something that I may have to possibly return or I paid a lot of money then I make sure to put my receipts away in a safe place so I can get to it when I do need it and then once a year I clean them out and throw out the old receipts that have expired warranties. I've also started scanning them as well but I still keep the original for awhile.

I've been scanning for a while.
But, beware, Best Buy will climb on their high horse and require the original receipt or won't honor their warrantee... burned once, shop there no more

I've found that most receipt printers fade quickly even if in a file folder

Best Buy has never asked me for a receipt. I brought my daughter's laptop in, almost three years later, they found it and fixed it. They put more money into it than it cost originally.

Same with everything we buy there, it's all on their computer and they're great about it.

That is amazing. When BB first opened in my area I was recruited from another company to be a dept mgr in their new store. I was sent to the BB training in MN for 10 days where we learned the company rules. Somewhere in the top was the rule, get a service contract (big because that is where the profits come from), and no receipt, no service. It is still that way in that store. I stopped working for them because I could not stand that sort of customer service.

And OP.. I also find the receipts fade after a few months. And have you noticed that the tag with a windows code also fades?

As long as I give them my phone number to hook to their rewards program, I don't need a receipt. It's why we buy computers there. They always fix them after the kids drop them, pour stuff on them, etc.

I BELIEVE it has to do not with ink but with heat. The printers (with the slippy paper) use heat sensitive paper to print, it's why they darken in the sun/car. The reason I BELIEVE this, is because one of the other stores in the mall, their manager was looking for register tape and explained it that way when we only had the regular paper. If she was telling the truth or not I don't know, just what I was told.

Heh, I'm always up for a good tinfoil hat theory but the profit margins in those contracts are so insane anyway that playing games with them would be foolish.
