The US Fish and Wildlife service has been reintroducing predators into areas where they were hunted to extinction, to deal population explosions of deer, wild sheep, wild goats and other animals, depending on the region.

In the southwest, people living in rural areas are building "kid cages" to protect children from wolves while they wait for school buses.

quote:

Are ‘kid cages’ protecting N.M. children, or a case of ranchers crying wolf?

A child waiting for a school bus in Reserve, a tiny community in rural New Mexico, may feel a little caged in, perhaps claustrophobic — but that’s precisely the point.

About a half-dozen wooden and mesh "kid cages" are located at bus stops in the rural, western New Mexico town, where there have been sightings of the Mexican gray wolf. Some of the 300 or so residents say the shelters could save the life of a child who waits in the predawn hours for a ride to school, but critics say they are part of an effort by ranchers to demonize the animals.

“They’re designed so children can step up in them and sit down and wait for the bus,” Catron County Sheriff Shawn Menges told FoxNews.com. “What happens out here in these rural areas is that most of the time, the parents are going to sit and wait with the children [for the bus] in their vehicle, but that’s not always true.”

Mexican Wolf Endangered Species List Proposal Draws Ire

Depending on whom you ask, Mexican wolves are either in dire need of federal protection or dangerous beasts threatening children on their way to school.

The Mexican wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf, and was reintroduced into the American Southwest by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in the late 1990s. The initial population of 11 wolves expanded to around 75 by late 2012. While the USFWS has proposed to lift federal protections on other populations of wolves in the U.S., the agency proposed in June to add the Mexican wolf to its list of endangered species. This move would mean that people could not legally kill the wolves except in rare circumstances, and it would also expand the animals’ legal ranging area.

Wolf attacks on humans are rare, and having kids stay in cages makes little sense, unless there is some way to summon help if a wolf shows up.

Considering we are talking about children, I don't think it is that big a deal. Parents feelbetter about not being able to stay withtheir kids while they wait for the bus.

As for a way to summon help, they don't need to. They are waiting for their bus, so theoretically help is already on the way. Also, these days, even small children have cell phones so they can summon help.

State vs Federal

Like in Idaho. Public outcry and national news coverage about cruelty put a stop to the annual reduction of the rabbit population. Then the huge explosion the rabbit population put huge numbers of indigenous species at risk.
So the park service and federal land management imported wolves from Canada.
Cattle ranchers and sheep herders sued for the cost of slaughtered stock so everyone has to pay for the imported wolves both in importing them and in paying for their depredation.

Would have been much cheaper to let people get rid of the non indigenous rabbits in the first place.

Last I checked there had never been a documented case of a wolf, either gray or red, attacking a human unprovoked in North America. Doing some searching it appears there is now a case where a man was killed by a wolf, Saskatchewan in 2005, but the circumstances of the attack are unknown.

I'd be much more concerned with coyotes going after a child than the red wolf.

DesFIP -> RE: This is borderline on stupid. (11/3/2013 2:57:47 PM)

We could really do with wolves around here. Deer are out of control. Coyotes don't bring them down. The major population control here is cars hitting them. Not a good way to handle the situation.

Desfip, a lot if deer get hit near me too. Fish and game surveyed 100 deer per square mile in my county. That means when i drive 3 miles up the road to my friends house, there are 600 deer within a mile of my path. There is no limit on does. And i hear lots if gunfire this time of year. Heck, my neighbor shot one without leaving his house. He was having coffee and there were 6 in his garden. He had his bow tags, and it was bow season. So he cracked open his back door and shot one. Still in his pajamas.

HarryVanWinkle -> RE: This is borderline on stupid. (11/3/2013 4:06:27 PM)

Many of the ranchers in Western New Mexico and Eastern Arizona have been crying "wolf" about wolf re-introduction since the project was first proposed. They have done everything they could to prevent it from happening, everything they could to get the program stopped, including illegally shooting the wolves whenever they see them and conducting propaganda campaigns.

While the majority of them are deeply conservative, politically, it surprises me not at all that they've taken a play from the liberal playbook, that play being a "We must protect our children" campaign. After all, that play works so well, so often.

Reminds me of a friend telling me of him and all the males in the family going out hunting. They came home empty handed to find his mother in law telling them to dress the deer in front of the kitchen window. She had fed them breakfast and while washing up saw it. She opened the window and shot it. They were all properly humbled!

But the major cause of death here is from hitting a deer. Folks, never swerve to avoid hitting an animal. If you do, you'll go into a ditch or hit a tree. Hit it straight and you live.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: This is borderline on stupid. (11/4/2013 12:28:30 AM)

Easy answer: arm the children.

Oh, wait, schools are now "gun free zones" so we can't do that.

Here's the thing: grey wolves are rarely on record as having attacked a human. They are not the same critter as the Eurasian wolves of Northern Europe and Asia. We brought our prejudices against wolves along with our hatred of kings when we settled this country.

Wolves attacking humans in daylight? Pull the other one, it has bells on it.

Special dispensation is given to the Big Bad Wolf from "Into The Woods." If you were in the woods with Danielle Ferland you'd slobber all over her too.

Did your friend leave the pajamas on the deer after he'd shot it ?

<cheeky grin>

We never had to worry about the coyotes while waiting for the bus out in West TX. More like the train or the semis speeding down the highway. Dad even built a small shack so we won't get wet from the rain or snow (if the school did not call a snow day).

I'd be more worried about my kid encountering a human
predator than an animal at the bus stop. That's been well
documented. Not to mention the risks of some school bus
drivers. Some of ours made Otto from The Simpsons look
tame.

I support the Mexican wolf being put on the endangered species
list and being given the legal protection it would get as a result.

jlf1961 -> RE: This is borderline on stupid. (11/4/2013 3:09:04 PM)

Well, thanks to the state of Texas Fish and wildlife department, even though there has been a population boom of deer and in central and west Texas, antelope, the hunting limits have not gone up to account for the increase in population.

Now the US Fish and Wildlife service has long had discussions about reintroducing predators into the state. Of course ranchers have fought this tooth and nail.

However, some illegal aliens (We need immigration reform) have been crossing the Rio Grande disguised as four legged canine and feline predators.

Now officially there are no wolves or Mexican panthers (aka cougars) in any part of Texas, but I have yet to see a bobcat that leaves a paw print almost as big as my hand, i.e a little wider than the palm and a bit shorter than the ends of my fingers. Nor have I seen a bobcat big enough to take down a full grown feral hog.

I dont care what they say about things being bigger in Texas, bobcats arent that big. Of course there was one Armadillo large enough to attack Pearl beer trucks in the late seventies and early eighties, and Jack Rabbits do get large enough to breed with antelope.

ShaharThorne -> RE: This is borderline on stupid. (11/4/2013 3:12:52 PM)

There is a cougar in my area of TX...I just don't tell the Game Warden because I don't want dumbass hunters on my property.

DesFIP, I would show you images of auto/deer accidents where the driver or passenger were killed by the deer coming through the windshield...but I won't. I personally know of 2 killed by deer coming through the windshield. But you are right in never swerving to avoid a deer or smaller sized animal...the odds are you are safer just hitting them rather than trying to avoid them and hitting something much more solid.

No, you are mistaken, according to the official Fish and Wildlife report, there are no wolves and cougars in Texas. It must be an illegal alien disguised as a cougar. You know how sneaky those non Americans are.

I mean, the wild hogs killed and tracks around here are well documented and submitted to the Fish and Game people, because according to the Federal Government they are endangered.

Personally, I think we should reintroduce Velociraptor in the the US Capital, but I have been told that is a bit extreme.

punisher440 -> RE: This is borderline on stupid. (11/4/2013 3:31:27 PM)

LOL...ShaHar, I've got a short video clip of a cougar watching 3 Jake turkeys feeding on corn around my dummy deer.My brother and 2 cousins and me have seen several others including a pair of black panthers at different times. Yet the Game wardens still say after seeing the pics and video state there are no cats bigger than a bobcat in our area. Unofficially, way off the record, one told me that if certain wildlife groups found out they were around, they would try to stop deer hunting because it might interfere with the large cats...[8|]

If one did, it would likely react the same way I usually do. By gagging and wanting to puke.

I define a politician as a person with too few morals and ethics to stay a lawyer.

Reading Prodigal Summer gave me a new appreciation of the predator's vital role in the ecosystem.
