TNDommeK -> Just some advice (11/5/2013 12:58:45 AM)

Ok so I'm petrified of needles( yes I have tattoos but shots are something entirely different).
So I'm at the dentist today, getting my teeth scaled (deep clean, under the gum cleaned)
and I chickened out when the deadening shot was waved in my face.
I told my dentist to proceed with out the shot. So I endure a slight discomfort.
Whelp.....the numbing medicine she gave me has just completely worn off and the pain is kicking my ass.

I'm in pain!!!!
So, my advice, TAKE THE DAMN SHOT!
Lol

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 3:49:56 AM)

Awwww I'm sorry! You are braver than me because no way they get to do anything more than look at my teeth without a shot. I'm not bothered by needles but the ones in your gums are horrid.

Don't know what to suggest but I hope it wears off soon!

theshytype -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 6:51:56 AM)

Usually they numb the gums with a topical before giving a shot. Did she not offer that?
Even with the numbing you can still feel a slight pierce but, for me at least, relly isn't that bad.

Please take the shot next time! Hope the pain goes away soon!

First.   Call dentists out of your equivalent of the yellow pages, and say, Are you doctor feelgood?  If they say Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa?  hang up.

Then you go in and tell the one you got, you blast that fuckin nitrous at me until you are afraid I am gonna cakk right in this fuckin chair, and then turn it up 10 pounds....once I am near death, hit me with the needles, and do it all........I dont give a fuck about time............and I want a near death experience with that nitrous.

Then, (this should be before hand) get acetominaphin, ibuprofen, and naproxin sodium in the strongest tablets you can find) every two hours, swallow at least 2 but not more than 4 of each, drink lotsa water, and water only.........no booze......and about an hour before  you go to bed and at least 2 hours after your last pills drink about as much whiskey as you have ever drank, and hop in and snore.

Only way out of it far as I am concerned, and you can quote me.

The voice of experience (every three months).....

Do you have any cloves? If so, put one right on the spot (moisten it beforehand). They taste like shit, but they work. Hope you feel better.

Doctorscraps -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 9:10:51 AM)

Ugh...I remember the first time I saw that needle when I was having a filling put in so many years back. The first time I was on the funny gas, so I didn't even know about the shot. This time, I knew it existed, and I can only say that I screamed like a little girl in my head as I felt that metal pierce into the soft fleshy meats of the inside of my mouth.
It honestly didn't hurt as much as you'd think, a good twinge. What was worse was that uncomfortable "get that the hell out of my mouth" sensation.

MercTech -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 9:22:52 AM)

Gad, the dentists and their bloody shots...
I'd rather have the few minutes of pain than the three days of a swollen face and nausea from the shots.

LadyPact -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 10:07:40 AM)

I am legendary for hating the dentist. Thank God the one thing this little town has is one guy who works with Me and through My bullshit.

I'm prescribed a valium for the day of the appointment and he sends Me home with percocet. Yep. Valium before gas, and lots of it, just like Ron said. The mix of the other types of pills he mentioned get alternated for swelling and pain. Ice helps.

As to the being afraid of needles thing, some folks can lessen their fear of needles by <trumpets> getting used to other people playing with them in the community. Make yourself familiar with the thing you fear. You don't have to engage in needle play yourself. Just learn a bit about them. See what the 23G needle really looks like in situations where you're not afraid. It helps.

If it makes you feel any better, I'll be in the same boat tomorrow. We can suffer together.

AAkasha -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 11:04:33 AM)

TNDommeK call them and ask them to prescribe a very small number of painkillers to get you through the day.

mnottertail -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 11:19:22 AM)

Yeah, LP, I meant alternating, not 2-4 of each every two hours, first shot Ibu, next aceto, next naprox, or whatever, or naprox when you need fillers.

SWDesertDom -> RE: Just some advice (11/5/2013 12:23:36 PM)

I'm out in the field in the Army, stomping around with a giant Plantar's wart that's driving me crazy.

I head to the medics, to see what can be done (after trying ordinary wart removal techniques for months). The sadist PA says they'll take care of it, and hands me off to some E-3 medic, who barely knows which way the needle is supposed to point. She gives me like half a dozen painkiller shots, then discovers that she missed a spot, so more abuse from the needle is coming. Then she goes to work with a cautery pen. Of course, with enough cocaine-analogue in my foot to deaden anything, I feel nothing.

A few hours later, still stomping around in the field, the shots wear off... ow, ow, ow, ow! Now I'm out in the field, with no real access to painkillers, and nothing to do but trot around on my poor foot. I take my boot off that night, and my black sock is dripping wet, and what it's dripping with is thick and red (of course, we're out in the field for another two weeks)...

At least the damn wart hasn't come back.

I've had dentists do it both ways. Now I know to ask for the numbing. I don't have enough time to detail the nasty thoughts I have towards the first dentist, who did not numb.

Don't blame you. I figured it was standard.
Although, reading the other replies, I'm really thinking I'm getting short-changed settling for numbing.

kalikshama -> RE: Just some advice DDS scaling (11/5/2013 1:23:32 PM)

Naw, now we can feel superior to the wimpy doms ;)

Master does not do pain.  That is its job.

DesFIP -> RE: Just some advice DDS scaling (11/5/2013 2:23:46 PM)

Better hope you don't need periodontal work done. A mere 15 shots in the roof of your mouth.

mnottertail -> RE: Just some advice DDS scaling (11/5/2013 3:00:39 PM)

been there and done that.   I strongly advise against periodontal work, the fuckers are butchers and the success rate is low, my teeth would be in better shape today, had I not done it.

TNDommeK -> RE: Just some advice DDS scaling (11/5/2013 3:37:31 PM)

MC,I did the clove thing. I keep cloves bc they also ATP your breath from bring stinky. I'm used to the taste.
Thanks everyone for the comments! :)
I'm better now, still a slight discomfort but nothing like yesterday.
Ugh, and that was only one side, I gotta do the otherwise next week.
I'm still not taking the shot!
That thing looked like something Dr. Giggles would play with!
