I have a prepaid cell phone, primarily because I value my privacy. I never put my telephone number out in any kind of contest, solicitation or registration. There is no reason that they would ever need to get in touch with me with out using other means.

That being said, I get this phone call a couple of weeks ago. I hear the echo (International Call) and know the fun is about to begin. I get this Hindu, who tells me that she is calling with Microsoft.

She tells me that they have been monitoring my computer and have noticed that I haven't gotten my update in several months. I play along because I want to see where this is going.

She then tells me that Microsoft updates are very important and that if I give her access to my computer she will be more than happy to help me fix my computer.

That's where I dropped the bomb on her:

"You know that's very interesting, but I am an A+ certified computer tech with over 18 years experience. You called the wrong phone lady"

"You are a computer tech"

"Yes I am"

"*CLICK*"

How I would love to track those bastards down and do to them what they were wanting to do to me!

Status: offline 		If you are using a prepaid cell phone, why did you waste your minutes even having a conversation with a scammer? You know they will just move on to the next one.

Status: offline 		I don't understand why someone would pick up a call from a number they didn't know. Especially since prepaids cost by the minute unless someone bought an unlimited month. Even then, wouldn't they have something better to do with their time?

Status: offline 		Yeah, I'm on the national do not call list.. I deal with zero scammers.

MistressDarkArt- Lotsa people pick up calls from numbers they don't know. Remember the good old days when you couldn't scan your calls? And as for the prepaid phone minutes-- I'm sure he realizes how much it's costing him.

I guess I never caught on to the hospitality of these forums.

Status: offline 		We periodically get those computer virus scam calls - once every few months. In the UK you don't pay to receive calls so there's no reason not to mess with them, if you're so inclined. I don't bother, though I do usually tell them I know it's a scam. They tend to call the landline, but if they call mobile I don't want them going to voicemail, which costs money to check.

We're on the telephone preference service which stops telemarketing but not scams since, shockingly, the scammers don't have much regard for the regulations.

I do wonder when the scammer told you she was Hindu, though?

Status: offline 		Every once in a while, I get one of those 'extended warranty' calls, and I have a blast with them. I'll answer in my 'old man voice' (I'm a trained voice actor as well). I'll start rambling on and on, occasionally 'forget' who I'm talking to, and pretend to get credit cards numbers. Last time, I kept that dumb SOB on the line for over an hour before he finally gave up. I always consider people like that are put there for my amusement, when I have the time to play with 'em.

Status: offline 		the best ones I get are the ones trying to tell me that they can get my web site onto the first page of google. my first question is always 'sweetie, how did you find me in the first place?'

I've had one this morning, and had to run back into the house to get the phone when I heard it. so I was rather annoyed to have a snotty guy telling me that he could get me in the top listings. I told him I had my site as high as it could be on the first page of google within three days of launching the site, and that the only way it could get higher is if he was willing to pay for the top slot for me. he asked me how i'd done it. I laughed and told him I wasn't about to tell him that because if he didn't already know he's obviously crap at his job in the first place. he still insisted that I give him several different key words, or phrases to use so he could check.

'oh yes, I see you're right' me 'yep I know that already because it's my site and I did the work. it cost me nothing too'

I get several of these a month, or people wanting to charge me to build me websites. because yeah, i'm going to scarp all my hard work, throw away my top page listings, and pay someone else to do that for me.

I do know someone who's mum was ripped off with money by one of those Microsoft calls though. some people really have no morals.

don't even get me started on the automated payment protection insurance calls we have going on the UK at the moment. i'd happily hit those people with a baseball bat.

Argh! I know! So annoying! Bad enough that they're harassing us constantly, but they don't even have the decency to put a human being on the end of the line.

I thought this PPI stuff would have died down by now - there can only be a finite number of people with a claim, and surely all those who are going to claim have done so by now?

I've also started getting automated calls saying 'Great news! Get up to 70% of your debt written off!' We had bailiffs looking for us due to an admin mistake (fucking scary experience!), and apparently they did us the favour of selling our phone number to every dubious debt management company in the country. Very frustrating as we don't have any debt to begin with, but clearly we're now flagged as people who are desperately in debt.

Pressed 9 to be put on their do not call, nothing. Yesterday I pressed 1 to talk to a representative and told the kid who answered that either they stop calling me or I'm calling the Attorney General of NY to report them. So far today, nothing.

Those "companies" are really just a couple people in a motel room with laptops that have a random-number dialler, for the most part. They'll have a bank of numbers for a few hours, make a couple scores, pack up and move on. A lot of 'em are legit telemarketers who've gone to the dark side, because it doesn't take a lot to set up a tele-scam operation these days. Even if they have a 99% failure rate, that 1% that does give them the CC info justifies the exercise. They never stay in one place for more than a day or so, and it's a matter of minutes to roll up the tent and hit the road again.

I use a prepaid phone, I have unlimited calls, web txt and data with an automatic payment to cover the monthly cost.

It is through ATT, now the funny part was I needed a deposit to get a contract, that is why I went prepaid. Now I am getting txts from att asking if I want to upgrade to an monthly contract because of the payment and phone being constantly active.

Glad to see someone else is getting their money's worth. I too use an unlimited all-you-can-eat prepaid plan from MetroPCS. $30 a month (got in on a new customer special) and it was hands-down the best decision regarding cell phones I've ever made. I eliminated the land line I'd had for 25 years, let Metro assign a new number instead of porting the old one, and 99.9% of all the junk calls went bye bye with the old number. It's been heavenly!

ETA: I STILL don't answer calls from numbers I don't recognize, or numbers that come up as 'private', 'unlisted', 'unknown', 'blocked'. Everyone I know has been instructed to unblock their number before calling me if they actually want a response.
