Thirteen year old boy claims he was suspended from a Kansas school over a purse.

Stupid principal, stupid school system. Unless the girls are forbidden to carry purses, you can't forbid a boy.

However if the bag is big enough to put textbooks into, that's a different story. Then it's a backpack and needs to stay in his locker like everyone else's.

That's just not right. Discrimination, pure and simple.

This will likely not end well for the Asst. Principal, and maybe not for the school.

There was no mention of a rule banning backpacks and at least when I was in school, slightly after the stone age, there was no where near enough time to go to my locker and get all my stuff for each class. Everyone carried a backpack or book bag.

This school is looking at a major lawsuit and should grovel immediately and ask the boy and his parents forgiveness.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: boy suspended for having purse at school (11/8/2013 2:37:46 PM)

The idiot asst. principal hasn't gotten back to the reporters. I bet not.

This is a great example of pure discrimination. For gender bending behavior, carrying a classy purse is not disruptive to the school environment. It's not like he was wearing make up and a mini skirt. And you know what? If the girls can do it, he should be allowed to as well.

This is sad. I hope the school board comes to their senses soon.

I wasn't able to see the video, so I'm sure I missed most of the information. (That's on My end. Not due to a bad link in the OP.)

The only way I could have seen something like this not being some idiotic exercise of poor judgement would be if the school has a policy for any book bag/backpack/case over a certain size must be "clear" so that contents can be viewed without opening. (Some smaller charter schools do this as a part of their anti-weapons policy.) Otherwise, somebody is about to have a huge headache.

In the video they showed there was nothing in the school rules that forbids bags, and it was a more "hippie version" of a frietag bag, not a pink prada baguette.

Agreed.

The boy looked a bit femmy, but he was dressed just like a normal teen in jeans and tee shirt, no make up or styled hair. The bag went with his look and *I* would say was not disruptive in the least, except perhaps to the parents who no doubt complained to the asst principal.

Then the stupid ass suspended the boy, in my mind flying straight in the face of discrimination and giving *his* parents nice grounds for a lawysuit.

The world is changing, in my mind for the better, and even the school system in Kansas has to change with it.

Thank you for the additional info.

I hope the person who made this decision has a big bottle of aspirin. The public relations nightmare on this is going to be a huge headache.

Yes, it looks like they have a good case, but what always frosts me about things like that is the person who actually made the decision in this case won't be the one paying for the lawsuit. The district and taxpayers will end up paying for it, while the assistant principal who caused the whole thing won't have to pay anything.

Phydeaux -> RE: boy suspended for having purse at school (11/9/2013 4:39:41 AM)

too many fucking lawsuits.

Poor johny's feelings were hurt because he wasn't allowed to wear a purse.
Tough shit. Grow up and grow a pair.

And fire the damn idiot principal.

butternutsquash -> RE: boy suspended for having purse at school (11/9/2013 5:32:25 AM)

I'm not sure what the rationale was. Were they concerned that he might have been carrying a weapon? Granted, if the principal was motivated by some ideological bullshit, then let's castrate him with a butter-knife, but I would really like to know what the fuck is going on here. Does the school have a recent history of violence?

From the story, girls are allowed to carry purses during school. So, if the only way for the administrator to be consistent would be to ban anyone from carrying purses or bookbags/backpacks, unless there is a history of violence with only this kid.

He won't have to pay anything directly towards the cost of the lawsuit, but I'd be surprised if he didn't pay with his job.

no it was an unwritten customary rule that junior high students were supposed to not carry backpacks in classes for health reasons (to not carry to much weight from a class to another).
It seems that his pourse become a problem only after 3 months no-one told him anything about it.

According to the article, though, girls are allowed to carry purses.

The boy is, imo, homosexual or bisexual (not labeling as "good" or "bad;" just pointing it out). His voice may change, but I don't think his sexual preference will. If I were to guess, the action against him is homophobic in nature, and that isn't going to play well if this goes to court.

butternutsquash -> RE: boy suspended for having purse at school (11/9/2013 10:05:31 AM)

I just know that real world situations are generally more complex than what a news article makes them out to be. I'd be very annoyed with the principal if he had actually suspended this guy over him doing something "feminine." However, I really don't trust journalists. They tend to like putting a slant on stories to inflame people's passions, and they often leave out important details while still leaving what is published technically accurate.
