So I was just thinking back to my high school French classes and remembering the difference between tu and vous. I was wondering if French D/s couples have protocol on when tu or vous is used in conversation of if a sub always uses vous when speaking to the Dom/me. What about in public. Random I know, but if you speak the language and have insight I would be grateful. Thanks. :)

Hi ScoutsHonor, I think it very much depends on the dynamic within the relationship. In a slave master relationship 'vous' would be more appropriate than tu but of course it is up to the dominant in the relationship.
A good guide is, seniour school students talking to a teacher would use 'vous' and 'vous' is normally used for a boss unless they employer has been in the company for some time and is around the same age.

If you are speaking to a French dominant I would at least initially use vous even when he uses tu with you! He will soon let you know if he wishes you to be more familiar.

I would have to agree with Maria, 'Vous'would be more appropriate I believe.

Ha, this reminds me of a story of a Domme making her sub count out his strokes in French... And then gave him a hell of a lot extra for calling her 'toi' on the third stroke [8D]

I"m sure there are some who do. I'm sure there are some Spanish speaking doms who insist on being called, "usted", not "tu", and some German speakers who insist on being called "Sie" and not "du."

I wouldn't be surprised if there are even some English speaking doms who insist on being called the formal, "you" while addressing their subs by the archaic informal, "thou".

I thought that was solely reserved for us Ugly Americans. [;)] I took a year of French in high school, and I can proudly say I can get my face slapped, start a fistfight, and create an international incident all at the same time with what little I know. I also have the dubious distinction of being the only student my teacher knew who spoke it in a John Wayne accent. "Comment ca vâ, pilgrim?"

Vous is indeed used to spice up speech protocols in dynamics that use such devices.

Dutch/Flemish has the same distinction in address (U/je) and it is also used in high protocol dynamics. It's also a very subtle way to take M/s protocol in public, as you can use a respectful address to the Dominant, even if you're simultaneously using their first name. People look a little odd when you do it, but in the end nobody really cares or takes notice.

As an interesting side note: various English to French/Dutch BDSM-fiction translations actually adopt the honorific form of address in dialogues from s-types to d-types, despite this type of language being impossible/not happening in the original language.

The same happens when hollywood blockbusters get subtitled/dubbed: the vows/u form gets inserted whenever a native speaker would deem it appropriate.

When doing sessions in Spanish I tell a sub to use the formal if they use the familiar form. Cheeky little buggers [:D]

I speak some French and have conversed with a few submissive French males on CM. I always address them using the informal "tu" form, and they have always addressed me using "vous." It was never something we discussed; they seemed to take for granted that those were the appropriate forms of address.

Tu and vous have become much less formal in day-to-day French. I have had bosses where we "tutoyer" each other. It used to be that in traditional French families, children would "vousvoyer' their parents, however this is much rarer.

"Tu" is much more common with people who know each other these days, even in work settings. Vous seems more reserved for dealing with people with whom there is no relationship, such as storekeepers, people you talk to on the phone, etc.

I am not sure how folks do it in Ds relationships, since I've never had a Ds relationship where French was the primary language, even though it is one of my native languages. I imagine it is an individual preference sort of thing.

This reminds me of old friends of the family, French Jews who moved to the US after WWII. Married over 40 years and they still didn't use tu to each other.
