JeffBC -> Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 1:38:01 PM)

OK, this is just a Windows 8 Rant. Move along if you don't like a good geek rant.

So Carol had her laptop stolen and I just replaced it. Sadly, I was forced into a Win8 purchase which just sucks... partially due to UEFI and partly due to windows 8. But this is my first interaction with Windows 8 and man, all I can say is WTF?

For starters I'd really like the simple installation option that says, "Please don't send all my shit to Microsoft". But the default is quite the contrary and they work hard to steer you away from having actual security... or even pretend security. It's been two days and I'm still not convinced that I have unwired my stupid laptop from Microsoft's servers but I'm working on it. Advice here? Do NOT use a mail account for login... use what it calls a local account. Then go and disable pretty much everything that's on the default metro screen. I suspect it might be weeks before I find all the places that they are spying on me... or I will probably just give it up and install a real OS (see below).

And metro... let's just discuss that freakin disaster. Did they REALLY use the entire home screen to display a bunch of crap that is utterly meaningless to me while, at the same time, hiding away all the crap I really need under arcane key combinations and even more arcane gestures? Oh yes they did. I am utterly astonished at the pixel real estate used to display nothing of interest. But man, if I want to start photoshop I've got like 40 key clicks.

I suspect I'm going to rip Win8 off this laptop pretty promptly and replace with a unix clone but that gets back to UEFI. See, the FTC has decided in it's infinite wisdom that Microsoft should get to decide what operating systems are legitimate. One false move and you end up bricking your laptop. Now there's a security feature for you.

Overall, my net conclusion is that this is a GREAT upgrade... for Microsoft. I should help them to compete with Google and Facebook more aggressively in terms of stealing all your data without your knowledge. From a user standpoint I have yet to find much of anything that was actually a benefit and I've found a ton which is just plain awesomely more difficult.

I feel the same. I had a thread http://www.collarchat.com/m_4458149/tm.htm

ResidentSadist -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 1:49:43 PM)

"And metro... let's just discuss that freakin disaster." I hear ya' on that! I never dreamed Microshit would dumb down their OS to the point they would overlay a $20.00 phone app system on my $3,000.00 custom graphics workstation so it acted like an iPhone. I disabled all that shit and made my own programs menu sys. Anyone that can't see Metro tiles are just giant icons has never used windows in the details view mode.

However, I have benched Win 8 and it is faster at many things... up to 30% faster throughput. I hate the UI but the core runs rather well considering it is a MS product and not a real OS like UNIX or its clones.

So I tip my 'Red Hat' to you and acknowledge your pain, wishing you the best of luck.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 1:52:20 PM)

Wait till you try to do any meaningful network changes if you don't use . That's really fun. If you don't use DHCP or need specific DNS servers it's a frelling nightmare. You've got a laptop so this won't be a problem for you: configuring multiple network adapters is hell.

In fact anything that you would have simply clicked on Control Panel in previous editions is hard to find.

Windows 8 sucks. I never thought they'd put out anything worse the WinME; I guess I was wrong.

Marc2b -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 2:03:09 PM)

All of the horror stories about windows 8 (plus my own maddening experience with it on an office computer) have kept me constantly delaying my purchase of a new computer while waiting for windows 8.1 which supposedly fixes some of the issues with windows 8. Windows 8.1 is supposed to be available in the store bought computers now but I've yet to see it (I suspect they want to sell off their stock of Windows 8 computers first).

When I do get my new computer I plan on having a professional computer guy I know help me set it up and explain things to me. I've already bought my copy of Windows 8.1 for dummies. Now it is just the waiting.

Yeah, the core is neat.

The whole being assimilated by the borg thing... not so much. I still cannot believe how, in this day & age, they DEFAULTED to "send my entire life to Microsoft". Seriously? And damn... do I REALLY need to put it on a fucking network sniffer just to find out all the various places it's STILL bleeding information to Microsoft? I honestly think I'd work through the UI changes given my own abilities to learn and the 3rd party options to customize. I despair that I will ever get Microsoft's fingers out of my data pie though. I do believe they have built in MASSIVE intrusion right into it and made it hard as hell to turn that off.

@Malcolm
Heh... let's just be thankful that I don't have multiple network adapters. On the bright side, the UEFI bios means I get the joy of potentially bricking my $500 laptop just because I want a real OS installed.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 2:09:29 PM)

RS: You are correct there. The stuff running under the UI is definitely faster. But getting at that stuff to modify it is a job for masochists, not dominants. It's a disaster. Even worse if you get it on a tablet with the arm processor.

jlf1961 -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 2:12:05 PM)

Microsoft is a front organization for the borg.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 2:15:38 PM)

It's supposed to be fixed in Kubuntu 13.10. By extension I would assume Ubuntu 13.10 too.

I'd wait a month just to make sure that any problems are solved. You can search for your particular model on the Ubuntu/Kubuntu forums.

ChatteParfaitt -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 2:35:30 PM)

Yeah I truly hate my windows eight. It is so fucking proprietary. They want to be in control of everything you do.

I do use the icons for things I use a lot, like chrome and word, and you can put a "go to desktop" icon in there, which I use often.

I understand the touchpad logic behind it, but most of us aren't there yet.

The obvious question, of course, is why the FTC allowed Microsoft to decide what is and is not an allowable operating system. Am I the only person who sees a potential problem with that?

DesFIP -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 2:49:12 PM)

My ten year old desk top is on its last legs. I looked at the new pcs at Best Buy, and they all look like IPhones. Weird icons that don't convey anything to me. No way to get it to say anything using words.

I then looked at the $300 Google Chromebook and decided that's a hell of a lot more user friendly.

Yep. I think I'd go the same way with my next pooter. Unless I could get an easy upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7, that is.

Yeah, but there is that whole security thing again. When you look at Win8, I could eventually beat the user interface into submission. I am a geek after all. It's the data security parts that make it a "must urgently get rid of" operating system. And a chromebook basically does the same thing but even more efficiently.

I'm trying to wean myself off of google services for similar reasons to my hatred of Win8.

And hey, as a bit of general fun, I just uncovered another THREE ways it is sending all my personal data to Microsoft without my knowledge or permission. It's like playing whackamole.

JeffBC -> RE: Windows 8?? ROTFLMAO (11/9/2013 4:44:43 PM)

ROFL... and the fun never ends.

SO when you do the upgrade to Win 8.1, it apparently wants to INSIST that you give it a microsoft live mail account (so they can steal all your data). The really funny thing is I finally, in frustration, gave it:

[email protected]
password: fuckyou

At which point i got a message saying, "Someone has tried to log into this account too many times and it has been suspended"... then the installer moved me right along.

I love Windows 8.

As an employer....I Looooooooooooooove Windows 8.

I just bought 3 new devices for the office....test....vastly more stable, 2 weeks of confusion for staff (the other 7 desk devices are on Windows 7....servers are on Server 2008), now they (those 3) love it....(the other 7 are now demanding it), fewer viruses, faster start up times, fewer glitches......the 3 that have it (I'm not one of them....didn't want to be the guinea pig) love it.

I'm sold enough to buy the other 7 units.

(But then....I've never been one to get wrapped up in geek speak and "I hate Microsoft...because they suck" speak...I just like shit that works).

Windows 8 works.

Windows 8.1 doesn't "fix" Windows 8....it adds the start button (kind of), which is a "shell" (an overlay) and a few other things.

It's still Windows 8.

For those that despise Windows 8...Windows 7 is still available through Dell, Lenovo, HP, and a variety of other sources....and will likely remain so for quite some time.

The new Microsoft Office (2013?) does the same thing....you MUST sign up for Passport or something like it (or whatever their all encompassing Borg thing is) to make it work.

I recently bought 12 copies of MS Office 2007 on ebay, unopened (so they tell me...it looks like original packaging) so I could have Office available in the future for future desktops.

I HATE having to sign on to the cloud to get services.

Stooopit.

The purpose was (they should have created some kind of "pass through" stage for the rest of us) for continuity between desktops/laptops/pads and phones.

One O.S.

They jumped the shark.

I would imagine so....since the FTC manages problems with conflicting trade issues (and not a thing to do with product launches).

Product launches and product design are not the FTC's forte' or responsibility.
