So the Senate passed ENDA, that extends civil rights legislation in terms of employment, housing and so forth to gays and transgender people. It passed the senate with 64 votes, including 10 republicans, and with the support of a lot of strange bedfellows, including surprisingly the mormon church (several mormons voted for it in the Senate)..\

Yet John Boehner is refusing to bring it up in the house at all, claiming among other things 'it violates the religious beliefs of employers' (really? Does that mean I can refuse to hire or fire born again Christians because I consider them an affront to Christianity?) and how it will bring frivolous lawsuits (this from a man who was an ambulance chasing lawyer before going into politics, kind of funny). He is the classic example of why the GOP is going to face huge losses and become basically the old Dixiecrat party, as speaker he can't/won't confront the tea party, and has just made himself look like what he is,a bigoted, narrow minded jerk from 'the heartland', that apparently has nothing to do with empathy and compassion. The fact the people in Ohio elect this clown tells you a lot about what people from mid america are like, guess they love a sleazy lawyer with a crappy fake tan who is proud to be a smoker....and this is the best the GOP can do for speaker? People like Carl Albert and Joe Gannon and Reed must be turning over in their graves.

Well actually, I think ENDA is bigoted and narrow-minded, embodying no empathy or compassion for anybody beyond the special interest group it serves. What about people who "feel" or "self-identify" as sheep, or Klingons? Why shouldn’t those people have the full protection of anti-discrimination law too, regardless of their "designated" genetic make-up at birth?

That's a VERY EASY question to answer. Ten seconds googling is all it took.

You mean the Klingon identity minority should be added to the list of protected classes for the same reason as others on it...  a long history of violent oppression and overt discrimination in the past?

I think you have missed at least one important point.

I know a few Klingons, even dated one, also Vulcans, Green Orion slave girls and Bonies, nothing wrong with any of them. We are suppose to be free and open society I know this is false so legal protection is needed for such groups.

tweakabelle -> RE: Non discrimination laws protecting gays (11/11/2013 5:47:31 AM)

Anti-discrimination laws are an established part of the project to re-integrate previously and currently marginalised communities into the societies that marginalise them around the world. They don't create special rights for the people they are designed to assist, rather they ensure that those people enjoy the same rights as everyone else currently enjoys.

I wish I could say that I'm surprised that these laws are still being opposed by some on the Right of politics, but I'm not. This is what the Right has done all around the world - resisted attempst to remedy social injustice - from the year dot.

It's really time the Right realised it is on the wrong side of history on these issues. The best they can hope for is to delay the introduction of these laws for a couple of years. Sooner or later these laws will be introduced, society will be the better for it and people will remember who favoured their introduction and who opposed them.

Well jeepers! When has a Klingon ever been denied the right to marry or hold a job?[;)]

Well Bernadette forbid Sheldon from speaking klingon when he married her to Howard. Does that count?

Boehner has to be careful to avoid alienating members of his own party.
