FelinePersuasion -> Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/2/2006 11:19:16 PM)

someone wants to know how they can live on their own but can not do so. What agencies  in newyork can I point them to.

This person is 22.

They have no money, they're goin to school they are in a situation where the family helps a lot but they hoard it over the persons head and the person can not stand it any more.

Maybe I am missing something here, why is it that they can't live on their own?

Probably ask ArtCatDom(Think that's right), I believe he's in New York, and seemed very interested in the topic on another thread, so he'd be the only person I'd know of to send you to.

Not trying to be a bitch but I am a firm believer that if a person wants something badly enough they will find a way to accomplish it. First I would suggest......work......a job earning money makes many things possible.
Secondly........roommates........lowers the cost of living
Thirdly.......quit feeling sorry for themselves and expecting others to solve their problems.......no one is going to do it for them

And sometimes, you just have to bite the bullet and hang in there because the bigger picture (i.e. getting an education) is more important.  Spend more time out of the house.  Spend lots of time in the library.  Work.   Bite your tongue a lot.

Emergency housing should be for those who are truly in need, not for someone who just doesn't like his living situation.

After years of living on my own. I moved into a vanilla situation so I could go back to college full time.  It's not ideal, it cramps my personal life, but it's making it possible to get the college education I both want and need, so I'll deal.

fullofgrace -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/3/2006 10:13:32 AM)

work on getting scholarships. fastweb.com and whatever college this person is going to should both be able to help. then get a part-time job. save up money or see if you can get enough scholarship money to move out and get on your feet.

that would be my advice.

I hear those who stand on street corners and freeway offramps make up to 3 grand a day claiming to be homeless.

Bottom line is like everyone else already said.  If you want help, you need to get off your ass and help yourself.  Same with weight loss and everything else in life.
I had to work through high school and college because I didn't have parents who would hand me anything.  That person should consider herself blessed to have parents who will coddle her long after they should have.

No matter where you are in life, always remember that people have started lower and ended higher, and started higher and ended lower.  Unless someone has very debilitating mental problems, they are capable of living life on their own like the rest of us.

And if you're going to school and your parents are helping you out, be grateful, even if there are a few strings attached, or suck it up and tell them where to go and what to do with the potato when they get there.  But don't piss and moan about it.

Yours,

benji

OK..maybe I WAS reading this right after all. I was tempted to say "Get a job", but thought maybe there was something else I might have missed between the lines. If this was just a, "I (or whoever) is going to school and wants a handout from the gov't", that's just silly.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/3/2006 1:35:25 PM)

I agree with some of what others have already said.  I understand where you're coming from, though.  My family likes to give things with strings attached.  (Not so much shelter as large birthday gifts, advice, love, etc.  Fear the wrath if you don't do exactly what they say after receiving the aforementioned.  Fortunately, I've cleared most of that turmoil up.)   I love them dearly, as I'm sure you love your family, but you have to understand that deep down they're doing it because they think they have your best interest at heart, not because they want to strangle you.  You still need to be grateful for the gifts they have given you, and if the strings they attach bother you, discuss it with them.  Don't argue and yell, and don't keep it all bottled up.  Do the adult thing and talk it out.

Now, if things don't go quite that ideally, and you really need out of your house, I would say that there really aren't any agencies designed to help you unless you have a severe disability or have been fired from current employment (the latter is still no way to go for a long period of time).  I'm pretty sure you don't, so I would say that hard work is going to be the only thing that will pull you out of your current situation.  Finish school (congrats on that!), get a job, and find a cheap place.  The place you end up with might not be ideal, and you may have to settle for a different type of living than you're accustomed to, but it would be someplace you could call your own.

Good luck with everything!

I am a single mom with a special needs child. I have my own place and am a fulltime college student. I work 2 part time jobs and have no family helping me. I don't get assitance from the government except for medical and food, no money. I do not live in subsudized housing either, I pay full rent and utilities.

If this person is 22 and wants to move out, there is no reason they can't. At the college there should be a place to post that you are looking for a roommate and the college offers many jobs that students can do around their class schedule. Not all of the jobs are connected to financial aid, so there is no reason they can't do one of them.

Sorry if this sounds condecending, but I see no reason a 22-year-old capable of going to college can't live on their own.

I guess the consensus answer to the original poster's actual question is a uniform "I don't know of any."

Every school has a career/internship center where someone can sign up and get some assistance and leads on jobs, perhaps even at the school itself.

Then, once the person has enough money, you go onto roommates.com or craigslist and find a good roommate to move in with.

And agreed on the spend lots of time away from the house- it's amazing how awesome friends can be when you need a place to crash.  I spent nearly an entire semester on the floor of my best friends dorm room when my three roommates decided I was too weird and antagonized me.  Luckily, next semester they moved out and I got three awesome roommates in return.

Keep pushing ahead and get to that long term benefit.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/4/2006 8:23:43 AM)

And what if the school her friend is going to is not college?

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/4/2006 5:51:46 PM)

She has problems finding jobs due to being bipolar I guess. I have the same issues trying to find jobs I Can do with my pychical ability limitations.

It's not as easy or as simple to "just go get a job"  There have to be jobs ot be had first of all, they have to be jobs you can do secondly of all. And with out money she can't buy gas to go to said go get jobs. no job no gas. no gas no go get jobbie

missgiveNTake -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/4/2006 10:43:28 PM)

Has she tried to get on SSI? If her Bipolar is bad enough to keep her from working, she can get disability and even apply for low income housing. And yes mental illness is a disability.

The replies were based on the little info you provided us. A disability is another thing. I know what it's like have limited jobs you can do, since I have hearing loss and cannot waitress or do any job that consist of me answering phones.

FelinePersuasion -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/4/2006 11:42:49 PM)

She's been denied SSI before, but I think now that things are serious meaning no cash flow coming in ssi might not reject her.

MsSonnetMarwood -> RE: Agencies that would be able to help people live on own (7/5/2006 3:10:10 AM)

Question:  if she can't really work and has been denied SSI, is she really capable of living on her own and not only taking care of herself, but able to handle the stress of juggling school and budgeting and continuing to look for work?

I still say she should bite the bullet and put up with living at home until she's finished school.
