AxelandSuzanne -> New and exploring polamory (11/10/2013 6:51:12 PM)

New to the site, we are a couple that have discovered we are both dominant in bed after getting married and have decided that once Axel is done with college we would like to find a submissive third. So we are here right now to explore and learn.

Welcome to the boards! Lots to learn here. Check out our great poly section if you haven't already.

What's a unicorn?

DarkSteven -> RE: New and exploring polamory (11/11/2013 11:41:12 AM)

Stillspanked, the term unicorn is used for a bisexual female willing to join an existing couple as a third, because they're rare.

Thanks DarkSteven.. Why rare ? I LOVE getting involved with a couple than one person..You can never have too much love [:D]

The simple explanation is that relationships are complicated and that three people makes for three sets of interactions instead of one as seen in monogamy.

More specifically (assuming an MF couple taking in a female):
The existing female feels threatened by the new woman.
The new woman feels she's not getting enough time from the existing couple.
The man feels two draws on his time.
The existing woman felt rushed into this, and finds out she's not as bisexual as she thought.
In some cases, the existing MF relationship hadn't been fully set up, so nobody really knows what to expect.

Welcome you two. Good luck in your learning. There is, apparently, A LOT to learn in poly given the rather dismal success rates.
