In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead.
Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn,
saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved,
and now we lie In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

Thank you, KYsissy, that was beautifully stirring. Who was the poet?

Google it and read the situation that led to him writing that. It is especially moving against the backdrop.

All war is brutal, but WWI had its own special brand of brutality.

Will do next break.

WWII strategy was heavily influenced on both sides as a result of heeding the call for no more WWI trench warfare.
Not to mention the mustard gas which blinded and wounded soldiers during WWI.

That, and battlefield tactics did not adjust to all the new technology for killing. Sending wave after wave of men straight into
Machine gun fire was just sending them into the meat grinder.
