So yesty I got prompted for the latest Windows update - for Internet Explorer 11; about 56 meg for memory. No problem, downloaded and installed, pc rebooted etc; done.

Now I can't quote anyone when I post. And I've gotta say this particular window I'm typing in looks dodgy - no word wrap, just unending lines of text. Thing is my posts include assorted cut/pastes etc and as soon as I do that now or even just highlight something, the window gets wiped of everything 'cept what I pasted.

I did the dance at Microsoft for help but 10 minutes of skipping through their hoops getting nowhere was beyond my limits - I'm the dom here, dammit!

So my first no-frills post at CM (only taken 9 years), any suggestions?

Focus.

Agreed. Not only do all three work better but FireFox and Opera are not Microsoft & Google products which means they probably aren't beaming your life up to the corporate mothership. I'm a chrome user but I need to pick one of those two and move over.

Never looked back after installing Firefox. Very swift and doesn't screw up.

~FRing it~

I'm using an iPad right now, so I'm using Safari. But when I had my desktop...and will have again once I get the mobo I need...it's straight back to Firefox for me. I stopped using IE years and years ago. Absolutely love Firefox

Just as a btw - was that a typo, or do Aussies really abbreviate 'yesterday' to 'yesty'? Sensible enough. But - no idea why - I find that funny.

Ok, thanks for that.

I'm at least quoting again but the posting window is still a very different animal to what I recall and if I c/p a text block, it gets broken up to a few words per many spaced lines.  Except where I meant to start a new paragraph, that gets bunched up....  And (*gasp*) I can't yet find my old preferred text colour....!

As for "yesty", lol, all I can say is humans abbreviate and I've been hearing and saying "yesty" since I was a kid.

Errrm, not the writers of "Star Trek Enterprise" but, they're completely unaware that humans naturally abbreviate.  I mean really, "phase cannons" and "shuttle pod"...!  Take about 2 minutes before the crew'd be calling them phasers or cannons or guns etc.  Stupid Hollywood!

Ok, perhaps I should've mentioned that I'm old and there's truth in that "old dogs, new tricks" bizzo.  lol

And I can really vouch.  Managed to injure my elbow at work a few days ago, since diagnosed as a partially torn tendon.  That night and for the first time in my 59yrs, hadta brush my teeth left-handed.  Damned mouth ended up hurting more than my elbow....

Buy a battery operated spinning toothbrush. All you'll have to do is turn it on.

Well that'd make 2 new tricks for the one chore....  lol  Fortunately, speaking of bathroom chores, my elbow doesn't seem affected for clean-up after waste disposal matters.

Was talking to the even older geezer down the road and he swears by this Firefox.  So what tha hell (feeling a rush of adrenalin coming on), might investigate further.  'Specially as I can't get the text colour to work at all, now.

Give Firefox a shot. My computer had both Firefox and IE on it, but I only ever used Firefox. It won't hurt and it will give you a chance to dink around with it

Ok, I've taken the plunge and all my worst fears (of anything new and alien) are descending upon me....

This Firefox - downloaded and installed (from download.com).  And I look at my desktop and see icons for Optimizer Pro and Mobogenie and zilch for Firefox.  Lol, please tell me I don't have my personal pc full of spam-crap I neither asked for nor want and am contemplating putting the broom to and never trying anything new ever again.

See, I can't help but think there's nothing wrong with a name like Firefox so wtf is these others about?

More help, please.

Focus.

Crikey, this is a lottery waiting to see what size text even appears each post.  And I can tell you the (personally acceptable) written & formatted text has an unhappy knack of resembling a pig's breakfast in the "Preview" pane.   And guess which one came up on the discussion board the one time I (foolishly) clicked "Submit".  Dammit, I want a "Dom" button!!!!!

Arrggghhhh!!!!!

Ive found Firefox far superior, but NOT perfect. The biggest problems have been downloading and getting the avatar properly loaded in my app bar. And I'm on a MAC! If it really won't display properly so you can select that browser, wipe it all and start again. I've done that a few times over the years. Current Apple version is updating well, maybe because I'm on a Intel chip machine now.
Did I mention I don't do internet security programs and yet to have a virus? This won't last but will Always be better than a Windows derived OS?

Old dog? I relearned touch typing after 40 years away from keyboards and came to computers at almost 60. It's not youth, it's motivation and interest. Any animal trainer knows you can train any age animal, ONCE you get their attention and suss out what is a reward to them. If you get to where you won't accept being outside your comfort zone, you are one step in the grave and fast becoming incapable of meeting challenges. Any brief recollection of your life reveals challenges Will happen?
Really, you'll like Firefox a lot better once the learning curve is forgotten.

Urk. The problem there is not likely to be Firefox, it's that CNET (who are behind Download.com) have become crap and started installing bloatware recently.

Go to this post and follow the instructions in the second half to remove the programs it's added- http://www.groovypost.com/howto/avoid-computer-bloatware-from-cnet-download-com-crapware/

Then go directly to the Firefox site and download it from them- https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/

You'll also probably want to have a look at the add-ons site- https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/ Most of these are easy enough to install and one of the big advantages of Firefox is that you can download these in order to customise the browser to your individual needs.

I've noticed that. And CNET are crafty at getting you to install crapware as well - all the boxes are ticked by default and they make it look like you can't get your desired download unless you take the crapware with it.

And they've been using the old "light grey text on a light background" trick recently. It's a pity, because they actually used to be a really decent downloading option.
