I don't know if this relevant elsewhere, but I suspect it might be....

So I am in sainsburys ( big supermarket chain in the UK) buying dinner etc for a few days and I go to get some wine and notice that one of our faves is going cheap, discounted from £7.99 to £4.99, happy days, so I buy a couple of bottles. There are various wines that I buy and I usually find one my partner and I like discounted so that's the one I buy that trip.

Anyhow, I go to the self checkout, put my stuff through, get the usual bits of paper giving me 100 extra nectar points if I buy a pot of pickled gherkins or whatever and then the interesting slip of paper comes out, the one that says either "your shop was X pence or pounds cheaper today" or "here's a voucher for X pounds or pence of your next shop."

You know what I mean if you shop at sainsburys, anyway, the bit of paper says that my shop was "£4.35 cheaper today" and I think that's odd 'cos the whole shop was only 30 odd quid and then I thought, ahh, it's because the wine was cheaper than it usually is, fair enough.

But then I thought, hang on, the wine was £3 per bottle cheaper than it usually is, I got 2 bottles and the shop was only £4.35 cheaper.

This was when I had my lightbulb moment, maybe it is really fucking obvious and I am the only idiot not to work it out, but sainsburys work out the cost of your whole shop, and then work out if it was cheaper or more expensive than their competitors, if it's more expensive then you get the voucher for money back on your next shop, but your whole shop includes anything you buy which is discounted.

So today I did the same sort of shopping, went to the checkout, and this is the important bit, put my 2 bottles of wine through and paid for them separately. Then I put the rest of my shop through and when I paid for that I got a little slip of paper from the machine that said "here is a voucher for £2.87 of your next shop".

I saved £2.78 by paying for the discounted stuff separately from the non discounted stuff.

Now I know it doesn't seem like much, but I go shopping 2 or 3 time a week, so if I save say £6 or £7 pounds a week doing this then that's £300 to £350 a year which is definitely worth it.

I don't know if this sort of voucher system is in use anywhere else, but if it is here is a way of saving good money.

I'll have a pint, thanks

I think you may be onto something here. If you're ever in the Hudds Munch I'll buy you that pint.

Already bought the coach ticket, purely on the basis of future savings!

All it means is other supermarkets have changed their prices between your 2 shopping trips and/or there were differences in the prices of the other items you bought on trip 1.

Eventually, someone will notice and point out to the contract munchkins that they need to fix the programming on the POS discount system.

But, while it lasts, go for it.

That's genius. Tescos do similar. Might work on them.
