jlf1961 -> stupid health question (11/16/2013 10:43:46 AM)

I have gone under a general three times in my life.

However since coming out of it yesterday, I seem to have developed a nasty cough. Should I be concerned, or just treat it like any other cough?

Did they insert a tube down your throat while you were under? That can make your throat sore, so I suppose it could irritate enough to cause a cough. But if in doubt, call your doctor for advice.

yeah, I had the tube down my throat. I have always been told that after a general, you need to move around to prevent pneumonia from setting in, dont know how true that is. I usually start moving to get rid of that foggy feeling, walking and such.

I dont know what they used yesterday, but the anesthesiologist came into the room, put something in the IV, they wheeled me out of the room, I remember getting on the elevator, but nothing after that till I woke up. Then I still felt like I was in a fog after we left the hospital for the trip back to Abilene.

My best guess is that it would be residual iritation from the intubation.
But this soon after the procedure I would absolutely play it safe and inform my doctor.

Having been intubated, I say give it the weekend. Treat it like any normal throat ailment; tea, cough medicine and drops.

As for the continued fog after sugery, normal.

I had a bronchoscopy where I was under general and they ran a tube and camera down my throat. I had a cough and sore throat for a few days after. Warm tea, cough drops, and Chloraseptic worked fine for me.

Feel better!

angelikaJ -> RE: stupid health question (11/16/2013 2:47:23 PM)

I have had surgery and they wanted me to cough to prevent pneumonia.
They also taught me that bracing my rib cage with a pillow makes for a much more comfortable coughing experience.

You haven't said whether it is a dry (non-productive) cough or a productive cough.
If you are coughing and bringing up a lot or stuff that is yellowish-> green, then I would call your doctor ASAP.

TheHeretic -> RE: stupid health question (11/16/2013 3:37:09 PM)

Have you checked the aftercare paperwork? If a cough is listed as possible, I'd just give it a little healing time. If you call them, the malpractice suit mentality is going require they tell you to come in, have you spend the whole freaking day waiting around, maybe an uncomortable test or two establish it isn't the worst case scenario, and then being told to go away and do exactly what you would have done if you hadn't decided to fuck your day worse than already is.

Unless the paperwork says call them immediately if you experience a cough. Do that, if it does.

I say take your dope, drink something tasty and soothing (warm cocoa?), and let those opiates dumb you down to the point of appreciating children's television and naps.

jlf1961 -> RE: stupid health question (11/16/2013 3:40:07 PM)

I called my doctor here, the on call said that the cough, which is productive, is nothing to worry about as long as it dont last more than two or three days. Just to be on the safe side, he wants me to come in Monday.

Dreamless -> RE: stupid health question (11/16/2013 3:58:46 PM)

There's no such thing as a stupid health question. It's better to ask your doctor a dumb question and find out it's nothing to worry about than keep waiting until it's serious.

My sore throat remedies include warm lemon water, gargling with salt water, and a shot of alcohol. And tea, lots of tea. Keep the soothing drinks coming, remember that if it's a productive cough your body is trying to get rid of something in there, you'll probably be fine. I can't imagine the tubes would make your throat feel amazing, anyway.

I had that nasty cough for about two weeks the last time I went under general. The doc said it was normal from the intubation. He just said to not eat rough foods and keep hydrated. It went away about a week after that.

BUT if you're really concerned or it's more than just a cough, see your dr.
