darkinshadows -> .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 10:23:04 AM)

Whenever I peruse the profiles, or speak to some people within wiitwd, something often comes up that I notice.
Darkness.

Now me, I am .dark. - It's my nick because of my hair.  But people automatitically assume that it's 'dark' because of the BDSM.
Why is 'darkness' associated with 'bad things' - or in turn BDSM?
Theres a thread already running, that is entitled 'The Dark Side' that has negative connotations.  Why is that title chosen?  When discussing BDSM with others, its remarkable how many people mention the 'darker' aspects of their life as bondage, whippings, bloodplay or even domination and submission... etc.

Whats so 'Dark' about BDSM?
Whats so negative about 'Dark'?

If you Google "define: dark" you'll get lots of reasons why dark is considered negative. In my opinion, WIITWD falls under the dark category generally for mainstream vanilla folks to describe anything they fear.
Edited to add that for some reason this thread put me in mind of the woman from the Fox wife-swap show who screamed and ranted about "darksiders" for most of the last 10 minutes of airtime!

It's not dark, merely occult.

IronBear -> RE: .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 10:42:59 AM)

Annnnd as we all know Occult measns "Hidden" not evil but hidden mysteries. people who have hiden sides may be considered dark or even evil beause they chose not to allow the whole world access to their private life.

Many treasures are hidden in the dark away from mundane eyes who have yet not grown enough to see them for what they are..

I love the dark. It nurtures me when I'm ill or sad or even hurting inside... I can step into the shadow and dissapear only to reappear some distance away (when my bloody knee is working properly). The darkness protectes me. But I need to warmth and brightness of the sunlight to grow..

Like brat alluded to, "dark" comes from the mainstream definitions and views on kink; and as much as some try to divide themselves from the "vanillas", we're all in the same boat called life, and share many of the same terms and feelings.

dark, you are the most beautiful angel I have ever seen in the dark. You make the darkness holy by your being and love for so many. I'm blessed to call you friend.

Tashacurly -> RE: .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 10:46:08 AM)

I suppose I don't see anything "dark" about BDSM or D/s, M/s...but that's me. I think that society tends to lable things that are outside of the norm as "dark", "evil", and/or "sick". I have been called all three of those terms, hell...for simply being more attracted to woman than men, go figure...let alone my liking of being beaten and tied up, lol.

It's the hidden, it's the shame, it's the torture and torment.

It's outside the 'norm,' it's the fear of the unknown because to be known might mean we are no longer accepted as human beings but viewed as less than animals, undeserving of compassion or consideration.

It's the different .. the unusual .. the fascinating but don't get to close to me because it's contagious and I don't want to catch it.

It's a part of each .. a part denied .. a part of us which is hard to embrace.

It's hard.. It's edge, cutting, razor sharp and makes you bleed.

It is the absence of light .. light which can blind and expose you to things which are better left unseen ..

Or, maybe it's just the blindfolds. ;)

I feel exactly the same way IB - shadows are warm and comforting.
I understand that people see the 'dark' as something hidden - I just wonder why it has to be so negative (sometimes) in the same breath.  Whilst the dark can be 'occult' - it can be incredibly positive and beautiful.

And IB - you have this angel blushing completely at your words - and I am, as always in awe of your kindness.  Thanks for your wonderful words.  The feelings mutual.

In the harsh light of day, everything takes on the sharp edges that define equally harsh realities.

The enveloping blanket of darkness gives birth to mystery and imagination. It is chaos, and contains everything, and nothing.

Many fear the unknown, I revel in it's promise.

Celeste sweet, I've been sitting here for a few minutes now enjoying a glass of delightfull port and looking at the bottom line of your siggy

Don't fuck with a menopausal sadist!

Damned if what I read was "Don't fuck with a marsupial sadist". I was trying to remember of I have ever heard of a Masupial Sadist. Ok so the big boomers (Large Red Kangaroos) when cornered near a dam by dogs will wade ito the dam ad catch a dog and gut it with the hind legs or just grab the dog with their front paws and drown it but that is self defense.. Then the penny dropped and realised the word was not marsupial but menopausal..... For I moment I pictured you bounding through the outback scrub with a herd or roos....

Returning you to the staion after this brief interlude....

zenofeller -> RE: .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 11:47:50 AM)

i never took dark to mean negative automatically. if you say "the conversation took a lighter turn" that doesn't mean anything positive either, does it ? [:D]

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 12:31:39 PM)

People like feeling nasty, dirty, special, evil- like they are taking a walk on the wild side, something secret, thus something "in the dark."

I like dark intensity as much as I like light intensity, and all the boring levels in between.

RavenMuse -> RE: .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 12:36:55 PM)

From where I stand many aspects of BDSM and D/s are considered 'dark' because most who look at it or even stick their toe in the water do so with their eyes closed. They keep themself in the dark, don't learn it, don't understand it and can't accept it.

To me it is anything but dark, it is light hearted, fun, play shared (When at its best) with someone I care about.

sophia37 -> RE: .warmth in the dark. (7/3/2006 2:18:49 PM)

I feel "darkeness" and "light" are literary concepts which have worked their way into our society. Just like we say, "pull yourself up by the bootstraps"  We dont know the basis of the meanings anymore.  Horatio Alger never pulled himself up by his own bootstraps if you read the story. So it has become a line used to control peoples behaiviors.

Same with darkness and light. Good and Evil.  Black and White. Its been boiled down to a syrup. And we all know syrup is strongly flavored. So Darkeness and Light now hold their own power over peoples imagination. If only we knew our past, we'd have power over our own futures and presents. Too bad for us the illiterate ones. Welcome to the new millenium.

I'm going agree with what Celeste said...
For me
Dark is the label we put on those things which we fear

Dark is the deeper part of our brain we fear looking into, but guides our actions just the same

Dark is beauty, mistery, hidden desires which really ought not be hidden unless one clearly knows/understands it to be contrary to one's well-being or that of humanity

For me, realizing what I consider dark/why is of extreme importance, but not a peaceful process.

Dark is my skin hue, and that of my little one, so I endeavor to love/honor it more every day.     M
