There seem to be far more pills that I take these days....

I've decided that a ton of vitamins....I should take.

Krill (because it doesn't taste like shit) which is supposed to give you that fish oil thing....D....gotta have D....more D is good but, I'm told more C is not.

B also.

B is good.

At least I can deal with simplicity...Krill, b, c and d.

This is not complicated.

What's that "V" vitamin for men? Don't forget that one.

I think you have been watching too much tv. TV ads are really good at pushing their products so people will become convinced that their product will keep them healthy and alive.

If you eat decently and take a statin you probably won't have a stroke or heart attack.

All the extra vitamins in the world aren't going to help keep you healthy if you eat preprocessed junk food. And if all you eat is preprocessed junk food, then the way to get your vitamins and minerals is to eat real food.

My doc told me I was at that age to take calcium - but studies have shown that taking a supplement doesn't raise calcium levels in the bones - but eating food rich in calcium does. So , for me, eating lots of greek yoghurt is the bomb! Just as well I like that stuff.

Google the vitamins you think you need and eat food regularly that contains a lot of it. Its really that simple - like washing your socks when you run out of clean ones.

Lookie, I am going to hunt you down and force you to eat a ghost chili!

Thanks to this thread, I got curious and counted the number of pills I take in a day.

There are nine proscribed medications, four mineral supplements, a multivitamin for old guys, and five dietary supplements, for a total of 19.

Of course to that I have to add the six glasses of green tea with ginseng, a large glass of orange, three glasses of V8 during the day with Damian, a glass or two of fruit juice (100% juice with NO added sugar) coffee and Ice tea.

i rely mainly on diet, i'll take a couple fish oil pills if i haven't had time to get enough in my diet naturally(once every few months), i take vitamin d regularly since i cant get it naturally( i can go out in the sun without blistering over in 5 minutes and since i like my flesh the way it is i avoid the sun), and even though my diet is primarily meat and green veggies i take iron since i'm anemic.... that covers everything i stick in my body except the occasional aspirin as a blood thinner.

Things they don't like to tell you:

Classic acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) is an anti-pyretic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, vaso-dilator, and blood thinner. It causes gastric distress in a small percentage of people. I can, in rare instances, cause a condition called Reyes syndrome if taken in large amounts as a child or young teen. On the other hand, it is the only one of the NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory) that does all these things and the only NSAID that hasn't been shown to cause problems with the liver or kidneys. Add that it is cheap and the patent ran out on the formula back in the late 1800s ... drug companies hawking stuff that is more profitable only makes sense.

The vitamin niacin helps to lower blood pressure. Used to increase the percentage of HDL (good cholesterol) for over fifty years it sometimes has a side effect of dropping blood pressure. Guess what, it does. Adding OTC niacin tablets to my diet has allowed me to half the dose of BP meds that give my kidneys fits and has my dizzy for a couple of hours after taken.

Sometimes the "latest and greatest" may not be the best for you.

hmm good to know, i have great cholesterol, i only take it when i'm heavily injured to prevent clots while bruises heal, i'll do some more research on niacin and see if thats a better option for the future. i have accumulated prescriptions for all sorts of things over the years i refuse to take, being stubborn and under the impression that my body can handle it and anything else is likely to make it worse. the medicine cabinet(actually a whole pantry) in my place has vicodin and oxycodone from a decade ago still in there and every type of medical wrap and brace you can think of, i'm never going to use most of that stuff but i figure if society ever collapses i can open shop as a medic ha

People using statins might want to read this (article is current but this information has been quietly out there for some time):

yeah i looked up niacin and from what i've found it is linked to some mental side effects, which is an automatic no-no for me, like vitamin B6 in too large of doses(less than is in a five hour energy drink) it causes brain damage. found out after i had a coffee with splenda enriched with b vitamins and got a horrible migraine, and promptly looked up what i put in my drink.

The issue is - is that if you take too much of anything, there can be toxic side effects.
