Depending on the generation you ask, there has not been a decent choice for president in the elections since, Eisenhower, JFK, or Reagan.

JFK I wonder about, since he was assassinated before he could really do anything, other than the missile crisis, and from everything I have read on that, he was constantly questioning himself if it was the right course of action. We are just lucky that Khrushchev blinked, although we did have to pull some obsolete medium range missiles out of Turkey, but it could have very well have gone the other way.

"The other way" in this case being a nuclear exchange?
(Was the u2 incident Kennedy as well, or was that one Eisenhower?)
I always think all of the Kennedy luuurve is a bit rough on Johnson: whatever you can say against him, he was a lot more effective at dealing with rival factions in congress than anybody the Dems have put in power since.

One U2 was shot down during Eisenhower, I have read that one got shot down during the missile crisis, but it crashed in the sea, but I am not 100% sure.

And yes, it could have very well ended in a nuclear exchange. The soviets had short range tactical nukes in Cuba as well. These are laughingly referred to as battlefield nukes, the problem is that when you consider fallout, it is an equal opportunity weapon, it kills friend and foe alike.

Actually, I might have that wrong. Khrushchev had already been here on a diplomatic tour of the U.S. and I thought Eisenhower had been invited to visit Russia in return but it was actually prior to a conference on East-West relations. The U2 incident tainted the conference and seriously damaged relations with Russia.

The Cubans have the wreckage so if it must have crashed on land or near shore.

The stuff in Cuba at the time could not even reach Key West. It could have been used against us in an invasion. That was why trying to put MRBM's in Cuba was such a big deal. The flight time for a missile from Cuba to Washington, and much of the rest of the East Coast, was so short that by the time a launch was detected and that information went up to the President to order the counterstrike the missile would have already hit D.C.. It was considered strategically unacceptable to try and deal with the Soviets if they had a potential decapitation attack that we could not counter.
