I used to be one of the moms that would wait out at Toys R Us at midnight to get the most popular toy of the season for my daughter when she was just a child. I would do it with my sisters and it was fun because we would leave the kids at home with the dads while we had a girls day out. Afterwards we'd stop for dinner and drinks because we would make a full day of it, going to every store possible for deals. Yeah, we'd make the plans the night before, cut the coupons, etc....

But since I no longer live near my sisters and my daughter is all grown up and neither Master or I need anything that we need to do Black Friday for, I no longer do it. I did however, go to a few stores today in the afternoon but none of the stores were crowded and I really didn't see any price differences from the usual prices. Few stores around here had any sales from what I could see.

The only reason I went at all was to exchange slippers I bought for Master that were the wrong size. And I rarely have a day off or get home early enough any other time.

I did Black Friday with the Mister's daughter a couple of years ago. It was my first and last. Too chaotic for me, and that's not worth the bargain.

Since my oldest son is here for the holiday, I went with him to Arlington National Cemetery to pay our respects to a teammate he lost this past June in Afghanistan. There were a lot of people there. Getting around DC to do some of the attractions afterwards was fine, no huge crowds and the drive to and from home wasn't as crowded as it can be.

We ended up at the National Harbor for dinner which was nuts because they were having their tree lighting ceremony, which we knew nothing about.

In the past I've shopped the Black Friday specials online and found that to be the best way to get deals and not have to deal with crowds.

Well, I'll be damned.

First, welcome to the boards, fellow Alaskan. It does get mighty cold up here, and black Friday or not, I spent My own time today curled up under a blanket watching a movie. Selfish of Me, perhaps, but I actually shopped for most of the family before the Thanksgiving holiday, when the temperatures were still above freezing. As for the rest, I'll be quite content to finish in December, looking at the Christmas lights as I go by.

Heh, thanks for the thoughts. Part of me wanted to hear from the other side, from people who have a reason why. I know I've been told that when you don't have a lot of money you have to fight to get what you can. One person even told me I was a yuppie who didn't know what it was like to not be able to afford something nice. Apparently a yuppie is someone with a car and a roof over their head nowadays because I don't have jack. I like my cheap cereal and packets of hot chocolate. I prefer a warm night and sleep. Friend had to run best buy for 22 hours and I get so upset at the twit shoppers making him work.

I'm in one of those professions where not working is not an option ( nurse) , and having worked Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter for more years than I care to remember, I think people in jobs that aren't essential shouldn't have to work. There are one or two things more important than the Waltons making a few dollars more - like encouraging families to spend a bit of quality time in front of the telly, watching a football game and grazing. Yep, it isn't the Waltons ( family tv show)) but if its the best they can do, good on them.

Oh that sounds like fun! I would love to do that with my sister, but I am in Missouri and she is in Kentucky. I may drag her out one black friday though. :)

Yeah, I have to admit, your idea of Black Friday shopping sounds a lot less abrasive. Just a day out to enjoy yourself.

The only reason I'd go to a Black Friday is to record everything that's happening...out of the way. I don't want to die if I'm not even participating in shopping.

Family rule is NO BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING!!! I rather sleep in or order stuff on the internet at a cheap price on eBay. I am giving my daughter and a niece make-up. Tomorrow I am ordering books for myself and I found a puzzle for Mom.

I no longer live near my sisters and our kids are all adults now so I no longer get to enjoy those days. It was fun while they lasted though. I admit there was one year where I fought off a woman for a cabbage patch kid doll at Toys R Us.

So, again, hotels, airlines, gas stations, grocery stores should be closed right? Because they're not essential.

About 15 years ago I used to do Black Friday every year. We didn't go for the sales and I can't remember there being great sales then. We went for the giveaways. Many stores had gifts for the first 200 customers. These could be items like lovely ornaments for the tree. One year a store gave out a survival bag. It contained things like antacids, head ache meds, bandaids, and lots of great coupons to get money off more of them.

Anyway, we'd figure out what time each store opened and who had the best gifts. We'd plan out trip around getting to the most stores and getting the most stuff. We'd normally be home by 9 am.

Yes, I am crazy about feathered creatures. I have a dozen chickens, 3 ducks, 5 geese, and 2 parakeets.

Revise that number. Just got 14 new chicks and 5 turkeys.

I just ordered a mattress pad and pillows for myself at Fingerhut...they had a special code for free shipping. That is $22 saved.

Oh my how funny!!
I have a friend I met this summer, her and her Master just moved here from Baltimore. This is her first holiday season without her kids or her sisters. To make it worse I found out that evening her Master had to work and she spent the day in bed. I told her she should have told me, it sucks being alone on a holiday especially the first one so far away from friends and family.
