Alright, I have some catching up to do. I only know the fourth doctor. My Aunt loved the show and introduced me to it in the 1980's. She enjoyed the terrible special effects and the fun writing long before it became a big hit. I even enjoyed the crazy movie they put out in the 1990's. I haven't had time to watch much else however. A bunch of friends bought me a ticket and then told me about it the day before, so I went.

I was impressed. The writing was great and the story was well done. I enjoyed the twists and using the story to explain how to fix other problems. With unknown technology and magic, you sort of have too or it appears to be a deus ex machina thrown in to save everyone. They did a fantastic job.

And other than the fourth doctor making an appearance and the twelfth doctor, I feel like I missed ten years worth of references. I'm checking up on it now, watching the 2004 ones in my leisure, how many crazy references did I miss? What were your favorite parts? Anything you didn't like?

Personally I loved all the doctors coming together at the end to save their home. That was huge and so well written. Didn't see it coming in the slightest!

The whole thing was the sort of self referential fanwankery that people have spent twenty odd years dissing John Nathan-Turner for, but which now appears to be acceptable coming from a producer who's taken three years to broadcast a full season.
Apart from that it was all right, I suppose.

Yeah. . BBC is funny with that. . .3 episodes a season, six episodes for a season. That's always been frustrating. . .

The early shows were aimed at kids. The modern series is definitely intended for adults. The openly bisexual companion likely gave that away.

Status: offline 		Then again, perhaps talking about bisexuality is still something akin to a childrens show nowadays. :P

I'm checking out the 2004 series. It's neat. Starting to think about finding the super old ones like one would 'star trek'.

I take it you are a fan of the show in some capacity?

It is interesting that a kid's show from the 1960s shows so much more intelligence and innovation that prime time reality adult television today.

I miss that. Seems like comics, video games and TV shows are all being made for adults now. I mean, I like intelligent writing, and that's what I could see in the Doctor Who film. I get a little frustrated with fans who lambaste a show like 'My Little Ponies' when they do something they don't like, like turning them into high school girls, when it's what the target audience, little girls, LIKES.

I am glad to see that a show for children and intelligent writing can go hand in hand. Makes sense why so many people enjoy it.

Favourite part? Definitely them all coming together to save Gallifrey :)

There were quite a few Wizard of Oz parallels in the story (and a pair of bright red heels in the Black vault) which I found interesting.

Nothing to do with the BBC, sadly. It's more down to the fact that Stephen Moffatt doesn't seem to be capable of doing a full season of Sherlock and Doctor Who simultaneously. By some accounts, the BBC were pretty furious that there wasn't going to be a full season for the anniversary year.

As for the "kids or adults?" thing, since the relaunch the show has very much been aimed at both audiences. The previous producer seemed better at that balancing act than the Moff, but he's still trying to balance the two, even if he's misjudging it in a lot of people's opinions. Of course it's likely that the child audience are more pissed off with his constant reality rebooting and use of characters as plot devices than the adults who might remember watching and enjoying Ghost Light or Kinda when they were a lot younger...

BBC wasn't the only one. I watched the first "season" of Sherlock and was just getting interested when it ended. 3 episodes? WTF? Why even bother filming until you have more than 3 scripts? Then season 2 finally comes along and its 3 episodes again. Is Moffat the only writer on the show or what?

Status: offline 		having watched it since I was a kidlet, i gave up with peter davidson an on, then got into it with david tennant... my sister used to hide behind the cushions ...she still gets shivers when they appear.
You can find the old series quite easily...
