Auburn stuns Alabama with 100-yard field goal return in final second

AUBURN, Ala. -- Chris Davis returned a missed field-goal attempt more than 100 yards for a touchdown on the final play to lift No. 4 Auburn to a 34-28 victory over No. 1 Alabama on Saturday, upending the two-time defending national champions' BCS hopes and preserving the Tigers' own.

As an Ohio State fan who hates every single SEC team on principle...I was an ardent Auburn fan for one day, and I think the only time I've been more excited by a single play was when Ohio State intercepted Ken Dorsey to win the national title in 2003.

And to have the game end THAT way was ridiculous...probably the third-craziest ending to a game I've seen (the Music City Miracle and the Boise St-Oklahoma Fiesta Bowl wtf-fest...I wasn't around for Stanford-Cal).

I watched that play, and I was stunned. I'm a bit light on college rules, but I noticed the regulation clock expired when he was around the twenty-yard mark. I thought that would have invalidated the play and thus the outcome.

At all levels a football play does not end if the clock expires.

If past BCS 'calculations' are any indication, watch for Florida State to drop 5 spots after this weekend, and Alabama to retain #1

That is correct. A play that is taking place when time expires is allowed to continue until it reaches its conclusion.

Also, if time expires while the last play is running, and the defense commits a foul during that play, the offense is then allowed to run one additional play because a game cannot end on a play with a defensive penalty.
