I really have a hard time with this time of year, simply because it is too commercial, too "what am I getting?" and too fake. For one month a year, people claim to believe in "peace on earth, good will toward men, while the rest of the year it is look out for number one and screw people before they can screw you. Add to that the stupid mother fuckers who go to Christmas parties and get shitface drunk and then tries to drive home. I lost someone very special to me to a drunk driver many years ago, which is why I do not drink at bars or parties, I drink at home. When I host a holiday party, I make sure that no one that is drunk even considers driving. But here are a few suggestions: 1) Perfect Christmas movies: Die Hard. Donovan's Reef with John Wayne. 2) Christmas tree: Potted Pine or fir tree, after Christmas you can plant it in the yard, or a nice poster of a Christmas tree. 3) Christmas dinner, this year I am doing lasagna. I have done brisket, steaks, venison. 4) Do something for someone else, anything that does not benefit you in anyway other than the satisfaction of doing something nice. Things to avoid. The Hallmark channel. Seriously, how many holiday movies can you watch that has the same plot? Kids fix widowed dad up with high school sweetheart, cynical corporate exec goes to small town to look into tearing down some old landmark for new factory, office, and finds love and the Christmas spirit. Walmart, hell any big chain store, after noon and before midnight, and never on weekends. Overly perky and cheerful people with the big smile and acts like all is perfect in the world. Sorry but these people are annoying at best, and would drive Christ to drink at worst. Finally, if this time of year triggers bad memories or depression, call someone. Dont try to hide behind booze or drugs. This is a bad time of year for suicides. If you know anyone who has a hard time at this time of year, drop in on them, just to keep them from dwelling on the past. Get them out and doing stuff, anything, let em know they are not alone.
