jlf1961 -> Tis the season, suggestions for holiday cheer (12/2/2013 2:54:31 AM)

I really have a hard time with this time of year, simply because it is too commercial, too "what am I getting?" and too fake. For one month a year, people claim to believe in "peace on earth, good will toward men, while the rest of the year it is look out for number one and screw people before they can screw you.

Add to that the stupid mother fuckers who go to Christmas parties and get shitface drunk and then tries to drive home. I lost someone very special to me to a drunk driver many years ago, which is why I do not drink at bars or parties, I drink at home. When I host a holiday party, I make sure that no one that is drunk even considers driving.

But here are a few suggestions:

1) Perfect Christmas movies:
Die Hard.
Donovan's Reef with John Wayne.
2) Christmas tree:
Potted Pine or fir tree, after Christmas you can plant it in the yard, or a nice poster of a Christmas tree.
3) Christmas dinner, this year I am doing lasagna. I have done brisket, steaks, venison.
4) Do something for someone else, anything that does not benefit you in anyway other than the satisfaction of doing something nice.

Things to avoid.

The Hallmark channel. Seriously, how many holiday movies can you watch that has the same plot? Kids fix widowed dad up with high school sweetheart, cynical corporate exec goes to small town to look into tearing down some old landmark for new factory, office, and finds love and the Christmas spirit.

Walmart, hell any big chain store, after noon and before midnight, and never on weekends.

Overly perky and cheerful people with the big smile and acts like all is perfect in the world. Sorry but these people are annoying at best, and would drive Christ to drink at worst.

Finally, if this time of year triggers bad memories or depression, call someone. Dont try to hide behind booze or drugs. This is a bad time of year for suicides.

If you know anyone who has a hard time at this time of year, drop in on them, just to keep them from dwelling on the past. Get them out and doing stuff, anything, let em know they are not alone.

I am doing my shopping online and probably at walmart. One gift that I am getting for Lizard and Bo is a shark oven mitt. Their poor mitts are falling apart. Lizard is into sharks so this is a good one. She is also getting make-up in the next week or 2 when I mail it off.

My suggestions:
1. A Christmas Story: Where the moral is "You'll shoot your eye out, kid!"

2. Gift cards: I know jack-shit about shopping. Buy what you want, where you want

3. Capital punishment for bad Christmas sweaters: enough said.

4. Take over the local 'easy listening' station and play an endless loop of Cheech and Chong's "Santa And His Ol' Lady".

5. Festivus: Decorating is e-z. One aluminum pole set in a planter. Feats of strength. Airing of grievances. What's not to love?

When I was a kid, we watched Rudolph every year... you know the one. The little elf dude who wanted to be a dentist. Love that thing. back then I was the odd one out so much. I never fit with anybody. I was always aware of being the orphan kid who lived a very different life than anyone I knew. I felt like an alien... until that movie. The Land of the Misfit Toys. The Charlie in a box, the train with square wheels, the polka dot elephant! It was a revelation to me! There really was a place that I could belong! I simply needed to go and find it. All the other stuff that went on paled in comparison for me. Hope... I found it from the winter holiday season.

best,
sunshine

ST: I'd never heard of a shark oven mitt. Having googled it, I'm in love. That's probably the best present ever. Useful and will make them smile every time they use it.

Personally I'd rather get a gift card, if it's an Amazon gift card. Then it gets used directly on books. I love my kindle. Which was a Christmas present from The Man a couple/three/four years ago.
I'm ashamed to admit I got a gift card last year for a store, and by the time I wanted to use it I had misplaced it.

Kindle, to start a fire.

Book, a bound edition of literary work, not some blasted chunk of software.

I told my sis an brother in law that an extra set of sheets and an extra comforter for my bed and money to be spent on books would be great. The local used book store is very picky, condition must be near perfect for them to accept paper backs, so 50 bucks would probably get me 25 to thirty books, and they have one hell of a sci fi section.

That little piece of software has about 200 books on it now. Many of them free.

I discovered David Drake when one of his Hammer's Slammers books showed up either free or just .99.
Although my favorite so far is the Northworld books.

Mom said that she would give me money for a mattress pad. I have a Fingerhut account so I got the one that matches Mom's and a set of pillows. I hate flat pillows...

I don't like sending cash through the mail 2000 miles. Money orders are a PITA, and while you gotta pay a fee for the card, it evens out. I tuck 'em in with the sponge candy I always send.
