Goodbye...?

Status: offline 		I'm in Buffalo for the weekend, checking out a new office opened by the execs, and I've made a few phone calls. In every instance but one (speaking with a coworker that I've known for years), no one says, "Goodbye" at the end of the call.

To a Canuck like me, this is passing strange. Is it common in the States for people to just hang up without saying goodbye at the end of the call...?

Status: offline 		I find that strange. Every call I can think of has ended with the two participants saying goodbye.

Status: offline 		I'm mostly administrative (and sometimes, I do IT work, and sometimes I manage projects...it's a hundred hats, really). I've worked every tier in my company short of having an executive position.

The thing is, though, I've encouraged and trained (if you will) my American coworkers to say goodbye at the end of the call. The calls I'm referring to are when I called for a cab, ordered food, even called down to the front desk...

I know from experience that not saying goodbye is prevalent in Florida, I wonder if the same holds for New York...?

I can't speak for the rest of the country but in Michigan everyone I talk to says goodbye. Maybe it's a regional thing.

Status: offline 		No, if I call in an order for a pizza, there's no goodbye.
"How can I help you? Pick up or delivery? Anything else? Okay, about 45 minutes".

In a store, they would end it with thank you but not over the phone.

Status: offline 		Calls from friends and family there is usually a good bye.

Calls involving businesses and doctors' offices usually end with some perky female in need of a lobotomy telling me to have a nice day.

What if I dont want to have a nice day? What if I want to be a grouch and scare children? What if I want to be a horror that causes people to run screaming into the hills never to be heard from again?

Status: offline 		I saw that a little bit in NYC. I see it often in industrial manufacturing stuff, not customer oriented or service oriented business. I'll be talking to the plant manager and he will say "ok, an extra 12,000 units" and hang up without saying goodbye. Otherwise most people say goodbye.

Imo, yes, especially in business settings. But I've always worked in corporate business where the calls usually end in something like "ok, see you in 10 minutes" or "Check your email in about half an hour" or "have a nice day" or just "ok". There's just usually not the goodbye thing because it's an impersonal call. Personal calls seem to end more in "goodbye" from my experience. Then again, I try not to end any calls in "goodbye". Goodbye means an ending and I don't see personal calls with family and friends and loved ones as ending.

Status: offline 		^ I thought he meant the act of saying goodbye not the actual word. Like ending the call without warning, just taking the info from you and hanging up.

I rarely say goodbye either. I say, "alright then, later", "until then", "see you later" etc
