I rant a lot about things in this world.
But just to make it clear. I do know how lucky I am.
I live a life that only a few generations ago, was the dream of royals.
Everyday I take for granted luxury that half the world will never know.
To turn on the tap and have hot or cold pure clean water, is a miracle.
I just wish that more people in this world could have more of this kind of life. I would give up some of it, if I could know it would be spread about to all.
Though I do want more in some ways. I have more than I need.
The things I really want, are the things that make everything better, for everyone.
I don't think that is any big special thing of me. I think most people wish it was better for everyone. It is the believing it can be that is hard. That a sacrifice will not just be abused and used, before it gets where it is needed.

But I appreciate living like a King. So bare with My bitching about things in that light.

What everyday thing is an incredible taken for granted luxury for you?

Hot showers..or baths.
I don't have to chop the wood, boil the water, fill the tub with buckets....the luxury......turn on the tap...steamy soothing.....

Having a grocery store 8 blocks from my house (heck, being near one at all, probably).

Not perhaps applicable, but anyway:
My doggie babies, Oscar and Rufus - they know how to appreciate life and teach me not to worry about much (they don't - ever, it seems).

Yeah, hot chocolate. At work we have boiling hot water ontap. Don't even have to use the kettle.

Ice cream, in a zillion flavours. Way back, some poor bastard had to run up into the mountains to scrape up some snow and get back before it melted, so some syrup and flavours could be mixed in for the rulers pleasure....

An Avenue of restaurants of various etnicities 2 blocks away.

And our cat, dog, ferret, live better than most middle classers a few decades back. The luxury of furry friends as friends, not work animals.

I read this thread several times trying to figure out what it was that I take for granted. There isn't much. The one thing that comes close is my sight. And I only take that for granted occasionally. Twenty-seven years ago I was told that I would be blind in twenty. I'm very stubborn and head strong... I decided that wasn't going to happen. Then I met my husband who also decided that wasn't going to happen. For a few years the prescription on my glasses got stronger and stronger, the sight in my right eye plunged until it caught up with the left eye.... BUT.... my last visit to my eye doctor was great... no change in the prescription... they've leveled out.

No treatments, no special therapy... just faith and stubbornness.

Ok, so maybe I don't take my sight for granted, but I know a lot of people that do.

I drive a car to and for work everyday. Most countries can not afford a car for each person. Or per family.

Had to think about that for a moment...but I suppose if I had to name something..it would be that I take our medicare system in australia for granted when I know in some countries people have to sell their houses to get the medical treatment they need.

Five time I have been taken to Hospital with less that 24 hours to live (All bar one combat wounds the fifth was a MVA. My Ambulance vs Large Cococola truck). I am living on borrowed time. Good and trusted friends, a marvelous family.. I take nothing for granted but each one is a gift fit for a king....

I have to add that you should also be happy that you don't live in a town so small that everything shuts down at 6 pm.  Whenever I go to visit my gma in Arkansas I have to drive 18-23 miles one way to get to a Wal Mart or something close to it...her town has a gas station, a general store, a restaurant, a school and a small trailer looking thing called a restaurant and a population of like 200 maybe.

Hell as a kid, (and I am only 30), whenever we went to visit my great gma (she lived in the same town my gma does now) we had to use her outhouse in the field....can we say wake every female in the house to make them go with you and hope you have good batteries in the flashlight???

My twin sister went blind for 9 months due to mock tumors on her optic nerves...she has her vision back now thanks to meds that she is now off of....but I have to agree with you on the sight thing as well....

I take healthcare and education for granted and I am stupid enough to view them as a human right. What complacency!

On days like this when its hot and sunny I get a beer out of the fridge and sit on my balcony and watch the pretty women and the world go by or walk down to the haven and and sit on the terrace by the water front and do the same. Work can wait for another day. I so take it all for granted when I think that in some part of the world whole families will be scouring through rubbish tips in 40 degree heat just to live for a day.

A wonderful thread, Kedi.

I take far too much for granted, and that embarrases me.

I can walk outside and get in my car and drive for miles and miles, listening to music.

I can turn my air conditioner on and not worry about temps of almost 100 degrees.

I have a mind-boggling choice of food to eat and liquids to drink, whenever I want them.

I live in a nation that respects the rule of law in general, and can have my grievances addressed.

I can speak my mind, without fear of having a bullet put in my head.

I can access information online, and speak to people around the world.

Having grown up very poor I don't take material things for granted, they are easy to lose, were not that hard to gain, have never defined who I am.
The one thing I try to never take for granted, yet do, is our freedom in this country to disagree with our government. I just luuuuuuuuuuuuuv that I can yell, or type, that I think our current president is an ignorant horses hiney and say that is actually insulting the horses hiney and not worry about being drug off to some horrid torture chamber prison to never be seen or heard from again. Now THAT is a truely wonderful thing!

I own my body
This is the greatest gift of all for a woman.
I choose who I share it with, no person can force me to consent,  hiding behind law, culture or religion
I wont be married off unwilling or fear for my safety based on what others think of my honour
and I alone decide whether I bear offspring ....my womb, my body, my choice
these rights are which I have are granted to so few women on a world wide scale

Chocolate pudding in a little can.
Whenever I go camping, I take some along. It is a wonderful luxury out in the wilderness. Especially if it is raining

I felt like a king traveling to 3rd world countries like Honduras to see how the peons live with their donkey carts and tin shacks.

And I'm amazed I can watch tv -- that comes from a satellite!

Taking things for granted is one thing and is also human. being alert to keep these "gifts" takes more effort as does helping others share what you take for granted....
