The Department of Defense has a really neat program, as detailed here.
Now if the Doctor in charge of a wounded soldier's case deems it beneficial, they will cut the paperwork for the family to be allowed to travel to the hospital where their soldier is being treated.
Expenses are covered for children for five days, after that the family has to pay for them. Most of the time the family's expenses are covered for 30 days.
Great program, I mean the wounded soldier is gonna get tired of seeing his kids by five days? right?
And even the most traumatic injury treatment will be wrapped up by the end of thirty days, and if not, the benefits of having the soldier's family close by would be negligible.
There is a reason that I bring this up.
Today I was in the mall going to a book store to pick up a special order. Even though I can make the Grinch look all happy and full of the christmas spirit, I watched the mall Santa with the kids.
Amid the requests for an xbox one, and other high tech stuff, one little girl was quite loud when she told Santa she wanted her daddy home from the hospital.
There was a tv crew there who talked to the mother, seems her husband has been in Walter Reed for just over nine months, and they have used up all their allotted time and vouchers to visit him.
When I was in the army, I was single and this kinda stuff never crossed my mind.
Funny thing, Brooke Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston has one of the best rehabilitation centers in the military medical network. Why cant the transfer this guy from DC to there so he is closer to his family? Or does that make too much fucking sense?
