Thinking of getting a pup for my mum for Christmas (or at least paying for it, the pups aren't ready to be homed yet).

Just in case anyone thinks we're stupid: yes, she knows, yes she wants one, yes she can take care of it. They've had dogs before - the last one was a dopey energetic gun dog so they can definitely give it enough exercise, and they can take it to work with them so it won't be spending much time alone.

Anyone know much about their temperaments? Is it possible to train them to not bark so much (next door has two very yappy dogs, and we don't want a barking contest). Are they OK with children? Do they tend to be easily spooked? While he would have his own safe and cosy spot at work, there can be loud noises and lots of people coming in and out of the building.

Cairn terriers are very barky dogs. They are...stubborn, funny, loving, difficult, stubborn but trainable, (did I mention stubborn?) (just checking)

They are pretty healthy little dogs for the most part. They *will* chase smaller animals if it looks like prey. (chipmunks, squirrels, tiny kittens, etc.) They love children they have been brought up around. They are not easily spooked.

Up until this year, we had 2 Cairns and a Llasa apso. We still have one Cairn, and he is now 13. (the same age the other dog was when she died of cancer.)

Would *I* personally get another one? I don't know...probably. There was one at a shelter down the street I seriously considered taking. Our female Cairn was nothing but a joy (although she was stubborn too) Our male Cairn is a bit of a curmudgeon, but very sweet and lovable.

Alright, please understand that I have had wolf hybrids, red bone hounds, blue heelers, collies and a rather insane Dachshund.

So would someone please tell me, wtf is a Cairn Terrier?

I mean a Cairn is a pile of stones to mark some spot, usually a grave, so is a cairn terrier a dog bred to stay by cairns?

I know google is my friend, but hey, I am working on my "bug the hell out of people by being difficult" abilities.

Actually, as I understand it, it is part of being an old grouchy geezer type critter. Besides at 4am this morning my bed was invaded by dogs. But they did leave me some room on the bed.

Jeff, you are just a big softie when it comes to dogs. I love my neighbor's Aussie Sugar and she just dropped a litter of puppies. I feel the need for a visit this weekend...

Oh, you mean a four legged rag mop. Gotcha.

Honestly, aside from knowing they are a real breed, and no clue as to personality, behavior or health issues, I know nothing about them. I have always had either working dogs are exotics (hybrids.)

I do have a rat terrier at present, and it seems his bark is attached to his jump muscles. He also seems to dance around when treats are being handed out or feeding time.

And he insists on his own pillow at the head of the bed and being under the covers.

Sorry!

Yes, thank you everyone for the input.

Though they sound like lovely dogs, I think the barking is going to be an issue for them. Their last two dogs were both pretty quiet even though they were lively. It'd be less of an issue if they lived further away from other houses but with the super-yappy neighbour dogs there would just be a constant volley of barks.

I agree. They are fun and lively, but they will let you know when someone's there. (most small dogs will without the proper training.)

HM says that if you want a small lively dog that is fun and doesn't bark (or shed) get a Bichon. :)  (they are SO cute!)

Excuse me, by Texas standards (remember we had a problem with an average sized armadillo that was attacking Lone Star beer trucks in the 80's and jack rabbits get big enough to mate with antelopes) a Newfoundland is a small, relatively quiet dog. And the are rather dignified in appearance as well.

Bichons are adorable.

It actually doesn't necessarily need to be small - their yard isn't huge but they are definitely the type of people who would go out and give it tons of exercise and they will put the time into training it. They got their last dog when it failed police dog training.

But, to be honest, I suspect she's just missing their last dog and has seen one of these cairn terriers in a show and taken a liking. She's not going to get one of the pups coming available, and I'm not sure she's even going to get a dog any time soon now she's decided one of these isn't right for them.

You know, it is funny, but I do not really see our newfie as a large dog, until he stands next to some dog others call large.
Or, when walking him in the dark, people scream, because they believe him to be bear.
