kalikshama -> Get in Shape for Women and Groupon (12/19/2013 1:19:48 PM)

On Dec 10, I saw a Groupon for "Get in Shape for Women" - 8 sessions with a trainer for $99. Up to 3 other women. This time of year, there will be less attendance, so I'd actually get more trainer time. I thought that was a good deal.

However, I'm also looking for a space where I can do yoga, so I called and asked if I could also come in and do that, or if it was appt only. I told her I saw the Groupon. She said it was appt only, I expressed doubt, she said to come in for a free week (3 sessions.)

The second time I went, I told her I had not purchased the Groupon, because my company offers Groupons, I know Groupon takes 50%, and other business owners are always willing to give me the Groupon price - that way they get 100% of my money, rather than splitting it with Groupon. She seemed amenable to this.

The Groupon deal expired.

The third time I came in, I was willing to sign up for the 8 sessions for $99, but she was no longer willing to do this deal. She said it wouldn't be fair if other people were not able to do this deal. She went on and on about how they were not going to do Groupon again. Oh, she tried to say they hadn't done Groupon in 6 months, and later plucked a form off the top of the one person who had signed up for the recent Groupon.

So I was feeling like she was BSing me, plus there was NO WAY I was going to pay the retail rate. If I saw results after 8 sessions, maybe, but I was not going to sign up for their program that day. Plus I need to get somewhere, so said "I must have misunderstood" and left. She said she would call corporate and see what they said.

Yesterday, she left a message that corporate would not approve that deal and they were not going to do Groupon again.

Today, guess what's in my email from Groupon? You guessed it, they are running the same Get in Shape for Women special.

In our discussion Monday, she also said if they let me do the deal, I'd only get 5 more sessions, as I can't get both a free week and a Groupon. I think that's BS too.

I've been having a real hard time finding a gym that's not too far, smelly, dirty, or expensive, but I'm not sure I want to do business with this one. Thoughts?

You tried to scam the price and it didn't work.. que sera.

It took hell to get off the groupon mailing list for me. I got so tired of all the spam emails of all the crap I was never going to have the least passing interest in.

How is paying the full $99 to the merchant a scam? If I had purchased the Groupon, they would have owed me 8 sessions for $49.50 after Groupon takes its 50%.

I think there is a distinct difference between trying to scam someone and trying to negotiate the best price/deal for yourself. Nothing wrong with trying to negotiate a better deal as long as you're honest in the negotiations.

As for being honest, corporate stated that they would no longer do this offer through Groupon, after which the OP receives another mailer for the same offer.
Makes me wonder who is really doing the scamming here?
