Thanks, Doll. Nice word is nice. The camera can be found atop a mountain in Arizona. It's about a third of a ton and VERY cold. It's mounted at the smart end of a 6 1/2 Meter eyeball. At 340 megapixel, it takes 30 seconds to collect the data from each snap of the shutter. The ZOOM photo, linked above, is about twice as wide and twice as high as the Moon. One degree square. There's a lot more where that one came from. Count the galaxies and do a little math and the numbers become very aggressive. Clearly, God, if there is anything remotely like one, is certainly in no way the intellectual coward the theologians have always taken him for. All Galileo said was "DON'T take my word for it, look for yourself!" And they locked him up and called it a good thing for four centuries. The telescope at issue was just good enough to pick out the satellites of Jupiter. 3x or 4x, no more. It is odd, if you asked me, that there are folks who take seriously discussion of the number of angels in a bushel and at the same time repress inquiry into the nature of nature. As if nature could contradict its' creator. What if he had shown people this? It isn't just a photo of two dancers. They have an audience. And now, we are a part of it. So. How many galaxies do you suppose there might be? Do you, as I do, find that thinking about it feels kinda good? A little bit like watching wildlife? I figure I might have thirty years left. I'm pleased to be here when toys like this one are around to play with. Today I read one the most promising bits of news I've seen in a while. It seems about thirty galaxies are orbiting Andromeda. The thing is, they are all going around together, in the same plane. Like planets in a solar system. The good part is, of course, that is against all the rules. There is no possible way to explain how that is happening. Yet, it is. Right there where we can see it. This means everything we know is wrong. Far from being a problem, it is an accomplishment of the first order. And on the other end of Creation, the days news also brings word the Electron is far too round to measure. This puts a nice round hole in several leading theories. At both ends of the scale the underpinnings of the Universe have slipped from once thought secure quarters. Chased through the night by gleeful white-coated lab rats with big butterfly nets to wave in the breeze. Hopeful, but not expectant. To a student of the game it is a wonderful and rare thing to see. Paradigms shifting. In a few years we may have learned what we learned today, and everything will be different, and still the same
