FR You should respect his desire to not spend money for him, also because you don't know how he got your gift and if it costed him money. I think you should just make his day special in a personal way (so thinking about something he told you), if he told you so this means he cares more about the thougt. An idea could be a letter, heart felt, personal and showing some effort in making it nice. Once my ex girlfirend asked me what I wanted for my birthday, because she said she could not come out with anything as I had all the stuff I needed for my intrests, I answered I wanted a picture of her, she thought I was kidding her but went to a photografer who took and printed the picture than framed and wrapped it... well... it's been the gift she ever done to me in 5 years of relationship that I appreciated most.
