At sea first-trippers were sent for buckets of steam, long weights, left handed spanners, the key to the fog locker and the golden rivet (and I won't even GO there *smile*)

No one gets sent to bring back the golden rivet, they get taken to see it.

It's a very old joke... "Q: What's the difference between the (insert branch here) and the Boy Scouts?
A: The Scouts have adult leadership"

Yes, we do understand the difference. Which is why I was very careful to ask permission from the people who did actually wear the uniform.

It reminded me of a little story but don't think for a second that I equate being a Scout to serving in the military.

Sent to feed the mules in Panama and brace for the bump as you go over the line (Equator)

It is the same in the US. They are civilians unless transferred to the Naval Auxiliary during time of war... I think it was the 80s when the WWII Merchant Marine personnel were given military veteran's status.

Today the Navy maintains a small number of faux Merchant Marine ships, manned by active duty Navy crews, but the bulk of the MM fleet is all civilian.

I have a question that is slightly off topic. Is the American Merchant Marine regarded as an arm of the military ? For many years the British Merchant Navy was denied that honor, even though they lost 30% of all the men that put to sea in WW2, ( a greater percentage than any other service) then eventually, it was admitted that they HAD served and the appropriate medals were issued and the MN were allowed to walk in Rememberance Day marches. I am interested to know if the same applies or applied to the American Merchant Marine.

Gawd, I can taste the water out of those canteens to this day. And I still have a P-38 from the good ol' days before they switched over to MREs. At our first drill back after AT 86, everybody in my unit was offered to take home as many cases of the old-style C-rats as they wanted, because the supply battery was told to 'dispose in place' in order to take in the new rations.
