Years ago my sister buttonholed me to buy my niece an "American Girl Doll" -"Molly" for her birthday.
She said her husband refused to pay..."$90 for a fucking doll!"
So I sent away for one.
I did it for her birthday and also because sometimes I didn't like him and he me. I'd call him "Sinead" to get him going.
So what are the thoughts that went through your head when you played with your favorite doll?

A friend of mine had the curious question about what kids thoughts when they played with dolls. But he went about seeking the answer the wrong way and got arrested at the playground.

Status: offline 		Ok this OP is borderline creepy. I played with barbie and her townhouse and her car. I don't know what i was thinking other than i liked barbie but it wasn't anything kinky or creepy.

Status: offline 		yeah the OP is filled with comedy value. I can see what one of his motives may be, even if the topic cuts rather close to the playground. He paid $90 for a doll and wonders what value and impact it had. Like was it really worth $90?

Status: offline 		We were poor growing up so alot of our toys were second hand from garage sales and such. But it was still exciting to get them. I always wanted to dress them up so i used to bug mom to buy me more clothes for them.

Couldn't tell you. When I was a child of 6 or 7, I was on the Captain Kangaroo show with other kids my age. For participating, they offered me a then-popular doll from the table of thank you gifts at the end. I told them I'd rather have the play medical bag instead.

True story.

Status: offline 		Forgot to add, I had a visceral horrified response when I saw this guy playing with 3 dolls-maybe that's why I didn't do dolls as a kid.

Status: offline 		American Girl dolls are dolls that have a history and story behind them. They generally come from a time in history that was interesting, and portray a female child of that time. There is a story book written about that doll, their family and friends, and how they lived during that time period. I would imagine that if a child of today were to receive an American Girl doll, they would read the book(s) about that particular doll, and act out living during that time period.

What did you do with race cars or army figures? Same thing, different story.

Status: offline 		When I had dolls as a child I liked to dress them up in beautiful outfits and make the house a mansion and they would drive around in a Barbie Corvette. I grew up poor, my dolls and stuff were used toys but for a few moments, I got to imagine myself dressing up in beautiful dresses, having a beautiful home and just having a life of entitlement. It was an escape for me.

RS, the doll was for my cute little niece so I would have payed $200 for it.
My sister didn't have the money for it at the time and it made her happy too so how could I say no?

Status: offline 		I think it was probably much like lw said. For Me, playing with dolls was imagination time. I think I remember Barbies more than I do baby dolls. When you're a kid, Barbie could be anything at all, so why couldn't you be?

And, I'm glad you got her the doll, Pops. Parents don't always have the extra cash and have the every day expenses to deal with. If the niece is happy with it, she's not going to connect the toy to family squabbles.

Blush, thanks, I remember that now, my sister told me something very similar.
She was pretty smooth, coming over one afternoon in June of '97 I think it was, showing me brochures of all kinds of dolls and doll stuff that was very expensive.

Oh, me and my friends would take lighter fluid and put it on models of ships, light it and grab model planes and dive bomb them on the burning ship models yelling; "Take that you fuckin' [mod edit to remove ethnic slur]!"

Lady Pact, thanks, and my sister says she still has it and she's 22!
Her birthday is in August and on that day my sister told me to put the doll on the front porch and ring the bell and open the door and yell in; "Hey Katy! Someone's outside here to see you!"
She came running out and saw the doll and almost shit! I got a pic of the look on her face.

Status: offline 		I was third child of four from a poor family. I was the little chubby kid who spent all her time with a nose in a book. I always felt very big and clumsy compared to my sister (a year older, and a looker). I used dolls to escape being 'me' and be someone that others admired and wanted to be with. I had lots of dolls (usually second hand or cheap copies of Barbie and Sindy) and I spent a lot of time creating a world where I was totally accepted and happy.

Of course, at that age (maybe 7 or 8 years old) I hadn't learned that it's the inside beauty that mattered more than the outside, but that's bye the bye.

I also liked to make things for my dolls - sewing, knitting, crochet. I still have those skills so those early days of play are still making a positive contribution to my life some 40 or so years later

Status: offline 		I had sindy, and Barbie. they both had horses, and I would have done anything to have had my own horse. I grew up with horses, but they belonged to other people. they were also naughty ponies, or wild, that I would create a bond with. the owners used me because I was good at staying on the naughty ones, and solving problems. once i'd done that they would sell them, and i'd be left heart broken. my parents couldn't afford for me to have my own pony though, so instead I made my dolls have the life I wanted. they had the bond, and adventures with their horses that I wanted. I was also a big reader, so had loads of books. I would use my books to build show jumping courses for them. that gave me an edge over everyone else when I took my equestrian exams and we had to design our own courses.

Status: offline 		Someone gave us a used Barbie jeep one year when Lizard was old enough to drive it. We had a hard time finding the batteries but sure enough, she got that Jeep under the tree and she went crazy over it. She would take her dolls for rides in it.

When I felt she was getting too big for it, I passed it on down to our neighbor so their kids can have it.

She gets make-up and jewelry from me now...easiest things to get for a 18yo...
