jlf1961 -> Worse than kids, I swear! (12/29/2013 8:40:46 PM)

For the most part tonight has been calm, up until about 20 minutes ago.

My daughter in law and grandson had come out and we were having a nice conversation at the table when Damian (aka Munch, Booger Butt, Demon Child) came walking up to the table saying in a very loud tone, "Blood, blood."

Anyone that lives with a toddler is going to look up at the child saying those words, and well, we were not disappointed, horrified, but not disappointed.

Damian's hands and face were covered in fresh blood. (here's the kicker, he was not crying or fussing or screaming)

We began to examine him for wounds, all the time he was saying "Princess, blood, blood." He broke loose from the panicked adults and headed for my sister's room, all of us trying to catch him.

We were met with the image of Princess licking her fore legs which were covered with blood. So was her blanket, her pillow, my sister's sheets on her bed, and numerous spots on the floor.

Long story short, Princess bit her tongue, decided that she really needed to put the blood in her mouth everywhere, including Damian, and sent us all into a panic.

Sis is on way to 24 hour vet, Damian is cleaned and two towels, all Princess's and sis's bedding in the washer, and Damian is wondering around the house yelling "blood."

I think that's the first time I've ever heard of a pet biting their tongue, especially to the point of lots of blood. Weird.

Had anyone been using the red dot to play with Princess, or anything like that? Maybe she snapped at something, and got herself by mistake.

She ignores the red dot, Blu on the other hand...

She stopped bleeding by the time she got to the vet, who could see where she bit her tongue. Still have no idea how she managed it.

Our lab mutt did it to himself as a "teenage" pup, though not as badly a Princess seems to have managed, and I've heard of other dogs doing enough damage to need stitches.

Seeing as you are a Fox News fan though, Jlf, perhaps you should wait for the most hysterical dog "expert" we get on the thread. [:D]

I bet it was a helluva spooky moment, when the little one sounded the alarm.

Princess may have bit something that cut her tongue.
A friend had a dog who helped himself to a can of food without it being open, only to bleed all over the white sofa.
Anyone who buys a white sofa is asking for it really.

That makes sense. I read somewhere how dogs and even cats (at least mine would) take cans out of the trash and cut their tongues trying to lick out the contents. If you open a can but leave the lid attached on one edge, they can really get their tongue sliced up if it gets wedged between the sharp edge and the side of the can. For that reason, I always cut the lids off completely, rinse the cans out well so there's nothing in them they can try to eat, and I smash the cans really hard for good measure. It's sort of a compulsion, lol.

Pet licking something and something bops the jaw... bitten tongue

I've seen it happen with a mama dog licking a rambunctious pup several times. And, on the cat that tried licking the kid in the face.

Princess was taken to her normal vet, the one she actually lets open her mouth, etc, who did a very thorough exam and decided what the emergency vet assumed was a wound on the tongue was a blood clot, since it rinsed away when he flushed her mouth.

He believes it might have been a bleed in her sinuses that was going down her throat and took blood to check clotting factors etc. Blood is normal.

He put a collar of shame on her (I know that is not what it is called) and told my sis to run a humidifier in the rooms that she claims.

He felt that with the electric heat, using the fire place has dried the air in the house.

If it does not stop within a day or two, he wants her back in the office and he will scope her.

E-collar, or Elizabethan Collar. That beautiful animal has nothing to be ashamed of [;)]

It's not the cone of shame, it's the cone of entertainment! We have a foundling kitten (cute black and white polydactal in need of a permanent home if anyone is interested) that keeps developing an abscess on her rear haunch. The last incident, it ruptured, so the vet stapled her up, and she's been wearing the cone the last 10 days. It's been funny as hell to watch her adapt to it, and she has still managed to remove all but the last couple staples (which is probably why the vet put in so many to begin with).
