Each city/state has regulations for certain career's. BDSM doesn't really. In some circles, they require some training, but only within that circle or group. To each their own I guess.

If it matters to you, find those circles of people or groups.

I do have a Domina University fable though... where you better watch out for those untrained Dominant women. They be dangerous!

That's because you have to be qualified to call yourself a plumber. There is no qualification for Master and therefore anyone who gives themselves that title believe themselves to be a Master.

I'm not from a country or lived in a country where the Masters set up a sort of grading system. BDSM in Europe isn't structured in the same way America is. People can still attend workshops, conventions and festivals as well as clubs and munches but there really is no hierarchy, just word of mouth about who is good at what and recommendations of who's workshops to attend. Just as any other individual in BDSM, you can earn respect amongst your community members.

We did have an American leather man arrive here in blazing colours. He did try to put more structure into our world but he fell at the first hurdle. The system here (which is probably the wrong word) is too divided and so hugely diverse.

In my world a man who is an expert in ropes is a 'Master of the ropes'. A man who is known and respected for his fire play is 'Master of fire' and so on and although I have a huge amount of respect for many Masters of their field, I can't help but think, they have Mastered an art in a specific subject, not all subjects of Mastery.

What if we have a guy who's new to the scene and that guy successfully finds himself a slave and proclaims himself to be her Master? So long as this slave is happy to call him Master then that's exactly what he is (within his world). If that same man advertises himself as a 'Master' and nobody takes him up on it then he's only a Master of his imagination but I say, thats fine too.

The above two posters are generally correct. However, in the old leather groups, there was a defined process of earning leathers. LadyPact is the local expert on that.

While there are no set criteria for defining what a Master is, I suggest that the following qualities embody what I think a Master should be:

Developing some skills (bondage, whipping, impact play, etc.) to a high level through study and practice.
Teaching those skills to others in the lifestyle.
Conducting their own lives in an honest manner.

May I ask why you chose to ask this question in the Ask a Mistress forum?

Master is just a title some people like to use - like Mistress, sub, Lady, slave, etc.

This comes from just one of many online dictionaries, pretty much all of which have the same basic definitions. If you own a slave...you are a "master". If you own a pet...you are a "master". If you are the male head of household...you are a "master". Yes, you can also be a "master" of something if you have extensive experience or training in a particular craft or area. But that is certainly not the only definition, nor the only criteria for having or using the title of "Master", and in my opinion anyone trying to limit the definition to just that is attempting to puff up their own ego.

mas·ter
[mas-ter, mah-ster] Show IPA
noun
1.
a person with the ability or power to use, control, or dispose of something: a master of six languages; to be master of one's fate.
2.
an owner of a slave, animal, etc.
3.
an employer of workers or servants.
4.
the male head of a household.
5.
a person eminently skilled in something, as an occupation, art, or science: the great masters of the Impressionist period.
