So as 2013 comes to its end, people in my neighborhood are celebrating with fireworks, which will undoubtedly go on past midnight tonight.

I will be ringing in the New Year with one drugged-up dog who must be given tranquilizers to prevent her from chewing up the (remainder of the) door frame, and another dog who can't have tranquilizers so she gets as close to me as possible, shivering and panting uncontrollably. (No, the Thundershirts don't work; I've tried.)

I guess I've just got two of the most neurotic dogs in Alabama. The third dog, thankfully, never hears anything over his snores.

I have a small, windowless room in the basement, formerly a workshop. I've never had a dog that tolerated fireworks or thunderstorms and I've spent many an hour locked in there with them, with the radio blasting. Unfortunately they did not accept being left here with the radio without me so I could watch.

Oh yes, thunderstorms are just God's fireworks, so springtime here in the steamy South is loads of fun for both me and the dogs.

As an update, last night my big 80 lb dog Chester kept getting me up to go outside, but he'd step outside, hear the pops, and whine to come back in. After about an hour of this, I locked him out of the bedroom and woke up this morning to a nice big pile of poo in front of the fireplace. :::sigh:::

This is not a very auspicious beginning to 2014, but I'm going to try to be optimistic. :)
