While perusing one of my all-time favorite sites, (www.blog.iblamethepatriarchy.com) I came across this quaint little critique of the "Lifestyle).
"I further suggest that BDSM, like most  counterculture      “scenes,” is perhaps overly self-congratulatory on its supposed transgressivitude, since its constituents clearly demand the most banal ritual conformity, to a degree that possibly surpasses even that of junior high school. Which school, as you know, wrote the book on banal ritual conformity.
BDSM reminds me, among other things, of Dungeons & Dragons, and the dog show circuit, and those dudes in the park with swords and chain mail, and indie rock musicians, and guys who wear Star Trek uniforms to work, and people who deconstruct “American Idol” episodes in internet forums, and toddler beauty pageants."

Ok.  Are you posting this to let us know someone else has an ill-formed opinion of BDSM and it's participants?

Fast reply-not really.

But I begin to wonder if gamma radiation pouring off of momnitors can result in gradual mental retardation at times.

I do believe that the author of the quote that I've posted has a valid point.  Too many of the "Lifestyle" folks on this site place a gratuitous amount of emphasis on some worn out ideals and rules pertaining to BDSM.

What that guy said is valid. BDSM can be taken like that, the kinky clothes just the same as someone who wants to walk around in a star-trek uniform. It is a club, a cult of sorts. Different strokes for different folks. I don't think his attiude needs any defensive stance.

He himself has taken a stance where he sees himself on a higher level than people who get involved in clubs and cultish activities, and thats something he has to work on himself. People love to see themselves as more evolved than another by disecting their activities and separating themselves from them.

Clean up in Aisle 9!  LOL.  Yup, I tend to agree with you, Caretakr.

This applies as a valid point, when people try to use them as a replacement for common sense.

I actually don't disagree at all, but I do have to say that it's not just on this board.  It's anywhere you go.  But if that's how those folks choose to do what it is they do, what's wrong with that?  If you don't want to, don't.  I don't.

I am still waiting to see if there is a question or a point hidden in there somewhere.  After reading the OP's profile, things became much more clear.

I haven't seen that on the threads that I post to and I post to all of them but the Gorean Lifestyle one, as I am not Gorean.  There are people who subscribe to a more strict BDSM philosophy and there are those who are a little more relaxed and loose with the way they live and play with WIITWD.  People are as different and complex as snowflakes, no two are the exact same.  It's not for any of us to criticize the way we interpret this lifestyle, as interpretation is subjective...

To the OP -

Is the link connected to you?  The use of "banal" in your profile and in the quote that you posted in # 1 was more than a bit coincidental to me, as most people don't use that word often.  Unless there is a "banal" club with a secret handshake out there that I am unaware of...  Just wondering...

Hey... take it easy on the guy!

His profile proves... proves without a shadow of a doubt
that he has BOTH a dictionary, AND a thesaurus, and he can use them!

Also, he's got a cute smile....

As for "banal"....
I've noticed a lot about the kind of ennui
that accompanies folks who bandy about "banal"...

Now.... don't go noticing stuff about pompous folks who say "ennui"
... cause that's true too, and it might hurt my feelings.... sniff

Further,
my sexual escapades in my younger days
-- put me in jail for 3 days (I was guilty, too, but they let me off with a warning)
-- had my face and story all over local newspapers
for weeks and weeks.... (honest officer, all them tied-up folks were here willingly....)

That may be banal to some, but it was memorable to me.

DD, a frisky...reformed old goat

PS.... remarkably, the newspaper stuff helped, not hurt the business I was running at the time.

Perhaps you mean "too many" for you.  Since you are still with us, however, I can only assume that you haven't hit critical mass yet.

I won't argue the point of the original post, though.  I may not agree to the same extent but I certainly see, in some places, where examples could create that perspective.  It's important to remember that we are all wired differently and what sends one (or 1 thousand) may not be the thing that sends another.  Neither is more or less valid.  Just "not for me."  Although I could care less about ritualistic sitting positions, I'm confident there are a lot of folks that don't share my view.  I stay away from the gorean board.  Easy.  I don't care to indulge in the ongoing "Mistress may I serve you" email fest so I abstain.  Easy.  If I have no interest in a thread I don't participate.  Easy.

Have you had any dialogs with people who prefer high ritual protocols to determine how dramatically your definition of 'gratuitous' differs from theirs?  Do you care?

Are there any particular "worn out ideals and rules pertaining to BDSM" that you wanted to discuss?  Or maybe you meant to open a dialog about what constitutes gratuitous?  I'm unsure.

Someone doesn't get it.  Thanks for letting us know.

There are two games that are popular.  We usually get the "I was in this before you and am thus more cool and you should be sucking my cock".  This is the other tack.  "You are old and boring and I am young and refreshing and you should be sucking my cock".

This is one of those times I wish I had high heels so I could step on those tiny 2" cocks...

TreSwank - it appears from your profile and your postings that you are still trying to find yourself and what you want from life.  Why don't you take some time, reflect on what you think your moral foundation is, maybe even figure out what you want to be when you grow up - and THEN come back to CollarMe and post YOUR thoughts.

Parrotting what some other person said is very uncool, and you don't want to be uncool, do you?

In noticing your Army sweatshirt, I'm wondering if you have the same opinion of worn out ideals and rules pertaining to Army stuff like some other newer 'my generation' soldiers making headlines with their liberal mindsets and modus operandi.

Take for instance the recent rape and quadriple murder of an Iraqi girl and her family near a US checkpoint... the same exact checkpoint where 3 US soldiers were killed, 2 mutilated and beheaded after their tortures a few days later. Those guys bought the farm in a very bad way of civilian revenge over the newer mindset of a few other soldiers in their unit. The Iraqi civilians nabbed the wrong crew of US sildiers and unfortunately did not get the retarded new mindset ones who raped and murdered...

Now I'm hearing on the news the main one is ex-Army (discharged recently for a personality disorder???), and he is now under federal arrest to be tried in federal court for rape and murders committed while in uniform during March 2006. Several other soldiers are also under arrest by the Army, and most have confessed their involments.

Sometimes newer more 'rad' ideas are just that... and should stay just so...

G'evening all:

*hands CD a pair of stiletto boots & points to the OP* Have fun.

I'm still wondering what the kid's point is? Ok, we have cliques, there's little groups feeling special in their pvc or leather. Yeah, so? Who says we're trying to do anything even remotely cultish? Maybe we're all just twisted, kinky, sick, perverted freaks that enjoy beating the snots out of each other. {shrugs}

Frankly TS, if you're feeling elitist? I think someone can shove that box you're standing on. The fall might wake you up.

Stay safe, play nice, & share your toys w/ others...

The funny/ironic thing is how often I could point to examples of people stating that exact "dramatic exposing" perspective.  Counter culture develops in nearly automatic response to every culture- including fringe sub cultures.

We're just like everyone else- the good and the bad.

There are people who play at it, There are people who live it and there people who have it as their social passtime.. All are correct as liong as none of them try to force their version down the throats of others and claim to have the only "TRUE" system..... Bit like the Gorean Lifestyle really.. Not for everyone and no two Goreans will agree on everything.. If it works for you, great allow your life and actions speak for you.....
