Bullwhip basics, where to start - 1/3/2014 8:14:41 PM

I am interested in expanding my abilities. I have bought a good 12 plait 4' bullwhip. From my research that's more controllable whip and a good place to start. I would like to start practicing on inanimate objects while wearing the proper gear (that should curb about 10 warning posts ;-) )

From someone who is experienced...

- What throws are most appropriate for BDSM? For example I've heard you should never use up and down strikes only 45 degree angles on subs...

- Of these which are the easiest to learn / best place to start?

I'm not looking to become and expert. Safe, skilled, educated, yes. However at this point I want to get what I need and expand later.

Thanks!

I suggest joining the local "whip crackers" group, buy a book and watch lots of videos. The techniques can not be taught with a few words of text in forum thread. This is where a mentor would be real helpful. Seriously, you are playing with 1/2 the speed of a bullet when the whip cracks and 100 times the weight if you strike someone with the thong instead of popper. If you crack the fall or thong on them traveling at the speed of sound, you'll slice them open and throw chunks of their skin across the room.

I can tell you the object is to hit with just the popper, no livestock or signal cracks needed. Until you become proficient, often you are just cracking the whip between strokes for effect. If You really want to make the cracking sound on contact, that is not beginner stuff. With those silent sweeping strokes, you can give your target a lot of pleasure rather quickly and the learning curve from target dummy to a real person is shorter then trying to become an expert.

I have never heard of that thing about 45 degree angles and I personally use a lot of horizontal strokes when working someone's ass. You just don't want to cross strokes if you can avoid it. Over the years, it can cause nerve damage.

Practice tips - use tissue, rice paper or paper towels over a pillow. You can see the cuts and where you are hitting.

Anyway . . . those are my ramblings, please take them all with a grain of salt, as "my opinion" based on my own experiences.

I see you're in Detroit, so this won't be particularly helpful, but when I went to NELA's Fetish Fair Fleamarket in Providence, RI two years ago, there was an area set up for practice and coaching.

The next FFF is:
Friday, March 07, 2014 ·12:00 PM – Sunday, March 09, 2014 · 3:00 PM
801 Greenwich Ave Warwick, RI 02886

Eye protection. You WILL pop yourself in the face at least once. And take Resident Sadist's advice to heart, he knows his shit. I learned the hard way, by just getting one and screwing around with it in the backyard 'plinking' cans and bottles until I could make it land where I wanted it to. The club I worked at had an old mannequin they'd dust with climbing chalk so you could see where and how you hit, but the pillow idea works too.

I agree with these suggestions
1-The eye protection is really kinda critical
2-Find a local whip master, have them teach you. Certain whips can be really brutal if used improperly so have someone who knows WTF is up show you what to do, and, far more importantly, what not to do.
3-Practice. As in practice practice practice.Carry that thing around the house, Flick it at anything and everything. Learn to control it.Learn it's every nuance.Learn how it can be used for light caressing. Learn how it can be used to peel paint.Learn how to put a candle out again and again.Learn it until the whip becomes an extension of you.
4-Then you'll be safe to play with a living being

I used to have an outside patio with hanging vines. The leaves made for awesome target practice.

Pin tissues to a clothesline. When you can move the tissue without tearing it, then you can move to people. But this is one of those things where good enough isn't good enough. You either are expert with it and safe or you're going to do major damage to someone.

I'm told it takes about a year to become proficient practicing several times a week. If you don't have that much time available then throwing it away would be the safer thing to do.

Control, control, control....

Fun game... blow up some balloons. Use the whip and see how many you can keep in the air without breaking.

Competitive candle snuffing can be a fun exercise as well.

A four foot muleskinner is a good place to start... good choice.

There's a whip group in Michigan:

I know that in Los Angeles and San Diego, they have whip practice in the park. (As far as the public is concerned they're just a bunch of people that do whip tricks) There may be something similar near you.
