'Dick' could be an abbreviation of 'puddick' - corruption of 'pudding' - or of 'dough'. But it could be just down to words like 'dick' and 'jack' being frequently used to describe all sorts of objects back then.

I have seen a can of it at the store and really been tempted to get it. But Id be afraid that it would taste horrid bc its canned and ruin it for me. Or does it normally come in a can?

Yes it comes in a can, because it is a "steamable" suet pudding. You put the can in a saucepan and fill it so it covers the can, boil the water, let it cook, and then open the can and serve, with custard, blancmange, cream, whatever you fancy.
I must admit, spotted dick is too stodgy without a sauce.
The treacle and toffee chocolate puddding ones are yummy BUT not good healthwise:)
my 2 cents.

TNDommeK -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (1/18/2015 12:41:37 PM)

Stodgy means???

And when you say cream, do you mean ice cream?

Lucylastic -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (1/18/2015 12:49:27 PM)

ice cream works:)
but I meant whipping cream or table cream,
we do cream a lil different over 'ome.
My daughter is living between leeds and nottingham at the moment:) she is discovering a lot of stuff she hasnt eaten since she was two.
The dictionary definition is.... Stodgy is heavy, filling, and high in carbohydrates.
synonyms: solid, substantial, filling, hearty, heavy, starchy, indigestible
"a stodgy pudding"
suet(beef fat) puddings wether sweet or savory is filling and hearty
Usually made into puddings, dumplings, and pies.

They always gave us custard with spotted dick at school. Hell's bells, if you have it with cream ... not much point in eating it, you might as well spread it straight on your bum and thighs.

Justsayin
we had custard mostly too at school, but strange thing happen when your mother gets a home made cream machine.
Long boring story......never mind[:)]

My mum had one of those things. I've always wondered how it worked!

Actually, I remember reading somewhere that you could buy ordinary milk, and unsalted butter, and mix the two together somehow to make cream. I tried it once, though unsuccessfully. Interesting.

So what did you think of the episode? Was Baxter's secret a letdown to you too? Nice to see Cora shine a bit, though.

Peon had a clip on his profile where you could hear his accent. I could sit and listen to him read the phone book and be happy.

I was a letdown for me. I was really hoping it involved Thomas or his sister.

TNDommeK -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (1/20/2015 9:17:20 PM)

DC, I was a bit let down, I wanted it to include Barrow or something juicer.

So, Im voting for Peon to read a paragraph and voice record it for his profile, as well as Lucy!!

TheBanshee -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (1/21/2015 2:19:40 PM)

I was wondering....does anyone know why Lady Edith doesn't have a lady's maid too?

TNDommeK -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (1/21/2015 7:20:56 PM)

Ya know, I wondered that last episode. I was recently reading this book I bought about household rules for staff at DA; and no where in there did it say anything about a ladies maid for Edith. But now that I think about it, did Sybil have a ladies maid? I think it might have to do with age maybe? That's certainly worth digging up more info.

Okay, I dug and found this:
Q: "Why doesn't Edith have a lady's maid?"
Carmichael: "Because she is not married. Although she does have a housemaid who dresses her called Madge. She appears in some scenes downstairs. ... We (the cast) all love how Madge is a bit of a mystery, ha!"
Here is my source:
http://www.zap2it.com/blogs/downton_abbey_season_5_will_gregson_come_back_i_hope_so_says_laura_carmichael-2014-02

And from what I have continued to read, it's because she isn't married.

TNDommeK -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (3/1/2015 9:06:12 PM)

He finally asked her!!!!
Mr Carson asked Ms Hugh's to marry him!!!!

I wish Tom would stay. :'(

And I do like that new guy Mary was talking to!

MariaB -> RE: "Downton Abbey" Returns! (3/2/2015 12:22:04 AM)

They have just sold off most of the outfits from season 3 and I can't believe I missed the sale. My friend went along and queued for hours. You give your size of clothing, sex and age at reception and have a choice of shoes, hats and dresses. The prices are from £20 to £50. They give you a bag and you don't know what's in it. My friend got a beautiful dress suit with overcoat. She's now re-watching that episode to see who wore it.
