Thank God this will all be over tommorrow. I mean, I love fireworks, but my poor doggies are terrified. One is glued to my leg and the other is under a table and has hardly moved from there all day. The kid across the street (he is only 10 years old) is setting M-80s off in the street. I just know this kid is a budding arsonist. I used to let him walk my dogs a few years ago, before I found out he is almost a complete sociopath....but that's another story.

What do you do with your dog(s) during fireworks - those who have them?

My dogs are hunters so the fireworks don't bother them at all. My mother used to have a dog that was petrified of fireworks and thunderstorms. It was really bad and the poor thing would just panic. If no one was at home he run around crazy and hurt himself. They finally ended up having to go to the vet and get him some medication to calm him down during those times that were upsetting, such as the 4th or during storms.

Hey SusanofO I know what you mean my dog has been edgy for two days now. All I need now is a good thunderstorm then he will be an 80 lap dog because he dont like thunder either lol.

I know a lot of dogs it bothers, but most of the dogs I know aren't hunters (well, one of mine is a Beagle, but he never actually hunts, he's a completely spoiled house dog). I had not thought of sedatives; that is an idea I will remember for next year. - Susan

All suburban dogs hate fireworks.

They don't mind barking though.

I have a GSD and he does not care about the fireworks...he slept most of the day without as much as twitching at them. Go figure.

My dog, a doby/shepard mis, is currently jammed under my desk hiding from the noise. Amazingly, for a big dog he its well in very small spaces. And at 15 yrs old, he is too old t safely take tranqs... so I just have really warm feet every holiday there are fireworks. Same goes for thunder storms... which are few and far between in Vegas...

Lots of dogs hate fireworks. There are herbal remedies that you can try for older dogs. I cant remember the name off hand. Also turn on some music fairly loudly, that often calms my guys down a bit. Its the silence and then a loud bang that gets them going.

I hate to change it slightly but my cat is the same way. In the case of fireworks or thunderstorms, if I am not around for her to get in my lap, she hides under the bed.

I use medicatoin from the vet.
You can give them to older dogs just reduce the dose and find a level they can tolerate with out being all messed up.
(The panic and stress is worse for an older dog than the medication). Start testing how your animal reacts to the medication before the expected senario of distress takes place so you are prepared.
Start with a low dose like a quarter of the described dose and increase a bit at a time until you know what level brings your animal some relief.
Never go over the dose described by your vet of course.

edited to add; also common sense things help like closing all the doors and windows and turing the air and some fans, maybe turn up the T.V. or play some soothing music turned up. Sometimes taking them to a lower part of the house helps too.

1) giving some medication just prevents the dog from moving, it can't relieve stress by running or barking, so that may not be the best solution. Copenhagen Zoo had an Okapi that died from nearby Open Air Opera .

2) training and strong leadership will let the dog(s) learn that sound willl not hurt it. Start with a far-away sound while you are in contact with the dog. Each time the dog barks or shivers, touch it ( to get contact) and say NO. When calm, give treat. Increase noise.

3) Don't support FEAR by comforting a nervous or shivering dog. That relly helps to get that kind of response.

4) Am I too sadistic?

I disagree with the highlighted statement. When a human takes a seditive like say a valium it not only slows down motor skills, it also calms the nervous system and instills a sense of I'm not feeling so anxious about this anymore(sorry for lack of betterwords at the moment). Seditives and tranquilizers for animals have the same effect on them. The ones I have given my animals do not ever cause them to not be able to move, that would be an acute overdose.

I agree, that's why I said ...some... - I just have had bed experience with tranquilizing medication.

I would also like to high-light your very wise word regarding the pre-nessesary treatment to see how the medication works on dog in question and the that you could have light and sound/noise to mask the impact of thunder or fire-works.

But there are more than one way to skin a cat to change the subject.

Another thing you may want to try is something that my girlfriend had some success with. She purchased CD soundtracks of thunderstorms and fireworks....I want to say it was through some veterinary catalog or online site. Anyway....she played them over and over...starting with the volume very low and gradually increasing. She says that it did help to lessen the anxiety her dogs were having somewhat although not entirely. She also admitted though that she has not been consistent in their use.

we have 2. not knowing how they would react, given that this was their first fireworks experience, we kept an eye on them; one ran and hid under the bed, the other one was completely unaffected. sorry to blow LAM's theory, as they are both "suburban", but only one showed any fear.

I have 2 and they just barked and barked and barked. Was looking for fireworks to drown out the barking!

I have a puppy and then my mom brought out her puppy and neither were bothered by the fireworks although my puppy was bothered by the massive amounts of people.

I have three,
A Dalmation
and two German Shepard

The Dalmation is a guard dog
and the Shepards are hunters.
The Dalmation tempted to get
into My legs while the Male Shepard
yelpped and ran around crazy
cause He wasent out side runnin
in this perceived hunt. The Female
Shepard kept running from the Male
growling at Him then running back
to the Dalmation at My feet as tho
to say, its ok We gonna have fun,
come on! And the Dalmation would
turn her head away and try to bury
it further into My legs skin. Its funny
because She usually tries to Dominate
the other two but Shes a woose when
it comes to bangs.
