defiantbadgirl -> corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 12:52:06 PM)

This has gone from inability to accept that brain dead means dead to downright disgusting [:'(]

There's still one question that hasn't been answered yet. How the hell do you go from a simple tonsillectomy to brain dead and deteriorating?

MsMJAY -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 2:45:34 PM)

This is a heartbreaking case. This was not a case of a terminally ill person or accident victim dying. The parents brought their otherwise healthy daughter in for a very common and routine outpatient surgery and she died. Because of the circumstances I think the family should be given more time to grieve and go through the process of letting go.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 2:54:26 PM)

The surgery involved more than a tonsillectomy. The surgeons also reconstructed her airways for the purpose of relieving sleep apnea.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 2:59:56 PM)

I know the family needs time to grieve, but why grieve beside a decomposing body? Decomposing bodies are dangerous. They spread plague. That's why funeral homes don't want anyone near bodies that haven't been embalmed.

I agree with MSMJAY that this is heart breaking.

I can't even imagine how I'd be if this happened to one of my kids.

defiantbadgirl -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 3:31:00 PM)

It's extremely heart breaking, but it does no good for the family to be exposed to the plague. Get the family away from the body until it has been embalmed.

kdsub -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 3:43:51 PM)

The little girl is beyond feeling so why not just let the parents deal with it in a way they will feel they have done all they could. We are all decomposing but what a shit way to put it when they are suffering. Reality will catch up with their hopes soon enough.

Sadly it shows that every operation carries a risk...

About 20 years ago a father from within my village experienced the same...his daughter was about 9 years old and also died from a tonsillectomy[&o][&o][&o]

There's some crazy shit in the comments:

http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_24830394/jahi-mcmath-family-spends-first-day-2014-searching

The Mom is responsible for consenting to the surgery. She consulted a doctor who advised against it, then sought a second opinion, which advised her to go ahead with surgery - which sounds like what she wanted all along. Then there is the matter of the popsicle that was given to Jahi prior to bleeding beginning, and Grandma's personal initiative to suction her granddaughter's mouth and throat with a vacuum, when the catastrophic bleeding began, which led to exsanguination and cardiac arrest. Grandma did not administer to Jahi as part of a medical team or at hospital instructions - the responsibility is hers alone. Then she lied and said she was a surgical nurse, when she is only a LVN. This sequence of events suggests the popsicle - which may have been contrary to an order of NPO when it was given 30 minutes after surgery - and Grandma's amateur suctioning of an extensive wound site makes me suspect these are factors in the tragedy that occurred.

kalikshama -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/7/2014 5:35:58 PM)

The Oakland girl underwent surgery Dec. 9 to remove her tonsils, adenoids and uvula. She was declared brain-dead after she went into cardiac arrest and suffered extensive brain hemorrhaging.

Removal of the uvula? WTF?
The uvula is vital to being able to swallow without aspirating whatever is in your mouth into your lungs.

You do realize that the plague is a bacterial infection (Yersinia pestis) that comes from infected animals and their fleas, yes? So unless the Children's Hospital was infested with flea-ridden diseased rats or she was handling said rats in her brain dead state, odds are pretty good she isn't infected with the plague. Just because you are dying or dead, it DOES NOT mean you are spontaneously infected with the plague. Feel free...in fact maybe you really should...read up on this from the CDC. It will help you to learn more about this stuff you claim that little girl's body is spewing all over the place [8|]. You need an ANIMAL RESERVOIR, not a decomposing body, to spread the plague. You're welcome.

By the way, bodies are embalmed to slow the decomposition of human remains so you don't look like a pile of festering meat at your funeral. It's not to prevent you from spreading a plague you don't have. Unless of course you were infected with Yersinia pestis from a flea that was on a rat.

Neither she nor her family are hurting you. So what is the big deal with her parents letting her go on THEIR time, not your time?

I think you are thinking of the epiglottis.

thishereboi -> RE: corpse of Jahi McMath decomposing (1/8/2014 6:18:27 AM)

I think it is extremely sad but I wouldn't call it disgusting. I can't imagine the pain the parents are going through.

And while the plague can certainly be passed through rotting corpses it generally doesn't happen in brain dead patients unless they already have the infection and this child didn't have it, so I think the parents are safe on that count [8|]

Damn.

I can't even imagine what that grandma is going through internally.

Damn.

No.
quote:

The musculus uvulae, which lies entirely within the uvula, shortens and broadens the uvula. This changes the contour of the posterior part of the soft palate. This change in contour allows the soft palate to adapt closely to the posterior pharyngeal wall to help close the nasopharynx during swallowing

The article said "deteriorating" not "decomposing." Big difference.

It may help the process, but it's not vital.

But, that's because society has trivialized the risk of surgery. The reality is that anytime you go under anesthesia or have surgery, you're at risk.

They're depriving themselves of the time to heal, grieve and let go because of their own actions. They are the ones prolonging the process. They're torturing her body to hang on and avoid dealing with their grief.
