They have a point really, don't they? Also, this would undoubtedly increase tourism.

DaddySatyr -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 6:09:07 AM)

They have no fucking point - outside of the ridiculous.

The ten commandments are the "foundation" of most of our most basic laws. In this case, I view them the same as having a copy of the constitution displayed.

We're not talking about a statue of Jesus, here. We're talking about some of the earliest recognized principles of being good neighbors.

thishereboi -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 6:23:37 AM)

I think if they want to put it up they should be allowed to. I also think it is great that it can be used as a chair. It's never a bad idea to have a place to sit and rest for a bit.

MsMJAY -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 6:35:02 AM)

I say let them build it. It won't be a big deal if we don't make a big deal out of it.

igor2003 -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 7:03:41 AM)

If this issue were being presented by people from Oklahoma, then either they should be allowed to place a monument there that represents their religion, or the Christian monument should be removed. However, since the people pressing this issue are from out of state, I think they should stay home and mind their own business.

As I usually stay out of this thread for My own sanity, I had to say that I agree with this. And truth be told, I may not like it, but freedom of religion is exactly that, right? Sorry. You can't have it both ways. You are either for it or against it. There is no "I am for it except....."

ETA the missing " I swear one day I will have more posts without the "ETA" then with.

I would worry about that but meh, my God has bigger fish to fry.

mnottertail -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 8:10:20 AM)

Vexing conundrum here, is the 7 foot of some satanic significance?  Why not 9, or 666 feet?

PeonForHer -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 9:32:28 AM)

FR

I've got to say, occasionally, I find religious debates just hilarious. This one's a diamond.

First, some nutcase Rep puts up a one-ton block of granite with the Ten Commandments inscribed on it - which includes misspellings. So, an embarrassment as well as a red rag to all religious (and anti-religious) competitors. Then, entirely expectedly, we have the atheists muscling in, then the Flying Spaghetti Monster adherents . . . this is a scream!

As for Satan - since when did he become a good guy? Who did his marketing - I want to employ that firm!:

'On its website, the Satanic Temple explains that it "seeks to separate Religion from Superstition by acknowledging religious belief as a metaphorical framework with which we construct a narrative context for our goals and works.

"Satan stands as the ultimate icon for the selfless revolt against tyranny, free & rational inquiry, and the responsible pursuit of happiness," the website says.'

Bullshit

A statue of Jesus would be far less offensive. Think about it with things reversed, how comfortable would you be with your capitol displaying a list of commandments which included the commandment that you worship Satan?

And suppose I want to build a monument to Dagon, God of slavery. It depicts black people in chains.

Would that also not be a big deal?
Is that also a good idea?

mnottertail -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 10:04:50 AM)

Dagon was a god of grain and fishing(symbols of fertility and multiplying) and an outright god of fertility.

Where and when he was to be a god of slavery has yet to be seen.

But assume there was a god of slavery, (well first why would there be?)   What slave would worship that?

So, cute bit of bullshit, but rather contrived asswipe to be dealing out in this thread.

If this includes orgies I'm in, if it is just meanless rituals I'll go on with not attending mass.

[:D] I don't think anyone much cares about the ETAs and the little pesky mistakes we all make.

Where in bloody Sumeria did this snapshot occur? (and those black folk are positively green).

MsMJAY -> RE: Satanists trying to build 7 foot statue in Oklahoma (1/8/2014 1:05:15 PM)

Awesome idea. I say go for it. I have always had a keen interest in learning about the different gods that people have worshipped throughout the years.

it is in Livorno (Italy) it celebrates the victory over the barbary corsairs by the Order of Saint Stephen and it's the main monument of the city, by the way in italy there was also a 4m (13.12 feet) statue of a baphonet but the nazist destroied it during the war.

edit: bronze tend to turn green with time
