Remember what punishments your parents used when you were a teenager? How did you defy these "ultimatums?"

For example, I paid for both my first car, a 69 hemi charger, and my first truck, a chevy 3/4 ton stepside, out of money I made by working or selling project steers.

I should explain that mom was mechanically inclined.

Therefore, my mom did not feel it was fair to take the keys away. However, mom would not hesitate, if she decided I was grounded, to pull spark plug wires and distributor cap on both the car and truck.

This was easily dealt with after she did it the first time, I just had spares hidden in the tack room at the barn and bingo, I was gone.

Mom, being the resourceful woman that she was, next removed a tire and the spare. This she justified by the fact that she had bought me wheels for both vehicles.

Alright, got spares for these, no problem.

The next time I was grounded for a weekend, I discovered that mom had gotten really crafty. She had bought two chains and chained both vehicles to a tree and used four padlocks on each vehicle. The tree in question is what we refer to as a "bull" mesquite, at the base, the trunk was two feet thick.

I had to admit defeat.

Hahahahahahahaha....great story :)

The one and only punishment I received was a slap from my mom when I argued with her about if what girls wore was responsible for them getting raped.
Other than that, my parents stayed out of my space. I was not encouraged to do what I wanted but I was not stopped either.
I had no parental influence at home because dad got drunk while mom worked the swing shift.
They left me alone on the weekends since just before my teens, because I was "the good one".
So, I defied conventional behavior by hitchhiking, skipping classes, and hanging out with college kids. Sometimes I would sneak into campus and attend a class or two.
I never got caught ditching my HS classes because I test REALLY well and my teachers liked me enough to use me for special projects.
I had more than the typical amount of freedom and an up surd allowance for a teenager.
I often wondered what my life would be if someone had dared to look into my safety.

Punishments were pretty random in my home.

After slamming the door too many times, the door was taken off the hinges. I had to earn it back.

Secret trip across two state lines, I was grounded for a week and shortened for good behavior. Then rewarded with the ability to make the trip again, but with their permission.

A party in the home, I got the "look" and left to stay with a friend. No other punishments there.

Overall, though, I was a good kid. I skipped a lot of classes but maintained my straight-A's. They knew they didn't have as much to worry about with me as they did with my sister.

What I really remember was being maybe 10 years old and having read everything in the kids section of the library. So I went down to the adult section and started taking out books I had heard my mother mention.

I can't remember if it was Sons & Lovers or Lady Chatterley's Lover. Either way the librarian was horrified and wouldn't let me have them. Somehow I talked her into calling my mother, whom she knew as an avid reader. My mother's response was that I could take out anything I wanted. If I understood it, then it wasn't too adult for me. And if it went over my head, then it wouldn't harm me.

The librarian conceded defeat.

About the only book my mother ever removed from me was a copy of something by de Sade. I did sneak it out of the drawer she hid it in but gave up shortly because his writing was tedious to the extreme. I bought that one at some odd shop in the Village.

I was never punished. My parents were never around and when they were they didn't care. I raised myself. They were never really around till I hit my 20's and by then I was already gone and married with a child of my own.

Now some of the punishments I placed on my daughter:

When she was arguing with me and she said she was going to leave and never come back, I got some boxes and started packing up her stuff and made arrangements with one of her friend's parents for her to stay there. I told her since she wanted out so bad, I would do it for her. After a week went by she finally cooled down and apologized.

Another time she refused to clean her room after it had been to the point of smelling really bad. So I cleaned it up...removing her bed, tv,computer...everything but the mess, from her bedroom. Told her if she wanted her stuff back she had to clean the room. Until then she could have fun sleeping on the hard floor with no pillows or blankets. Yeah, that didn't even last the night. Amazing how quick that room got cleaned.

My punishment was always to have to tolerate my mothers incessant nagging. I swear that woman could talk undert a later of wet concrete with a brick in her mouth and she would be whingeing, bitching and moaning the whole time.
And if she had nothing to bitch about currently, she would get historical.

Missokyst -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/9/2014 8:58:43 PM)

were you at least spared the gossip? I find those two things often run in the same body.

Dvr22999874 -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/9/2014 9:00:50 PM)

No she was also a gossip (who denied she ever gossiped) and a snob (what will the neighbours think ?). she was also the lousiest cook I ever saw, even during my time in the Legion. That's possibly why I became a chef.

Jumped out the window and went on Dead Tour.
I'd call em months down the road,from some GawdawfulPlace like Wichita Falls.
I was freaking incorrigible. It's darn tough to discipline a kid who can just vanish into America on zero notice. Tour was great for that shit. Lots of good peeps. Highly mobile. Outlaw rules. Transient family type atmosphere. Places to go. Good Connections. Import/export possibilities. Purpose in life Kerouac style.
Best of all, nobody had a straight name and nobody cared-they were all Moonbeam and Ace and Hondo and shit like that.
It was ridiculously easy to drop out of everything and hit the road.

Oh man that is so hot. It is something I considered on a daily basis as I was growing up. It sucks to want to run free while also feeling the pull toward agoraphobia.

slavekate80 -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/13/2014 8:30:12 PM)

I used to have to write humiliating sentences a bunch of times. Sometimes it was weird Bible verses verbatim, sometimes it was junk about how I'm worthless and going to Hell.

I'd try to negotiate... instead of handwriting it 100 times, can I type it 500 times? I had a simple word processing program on the computer (this was 1992-ish). Usually Mom was OK with that, in which case I'd type it ten times, proofread carefully, copy-paste a lot, insert a few random typos into the finished product to make it look natural, and then goof off for the next few hours reading or playing video games while she thought I was still typing.

I don't think she ever figured out that I cheated.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/15/2014 9:20:08 PM)

I lived in a grouphome for most my childhood, teenage years included. If you refused to make your bed before school, theyd confiscate all your bedding. Refuse to clean your room, same deal, confiscate all of it and you had to pay to get it back. On top of which you got a 0 .to many of those and you went down to level 1. No privilages,no outings, no nothing. Also got grounded a lot. Sometimes sent to sit in isolation at the school.

sexyred1 -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/15/2014 9:27:14 PM)

I think the worst punishment was when I was 10 and my Mom just refused to buy me white go go boots.

This might be why I have so many non white boots today.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/16/2014 8:09:23 AM)

My father stopped using the belt when I turned thirteen.

Then it was grounding and lectures.

I would have much preferred the belt to the lectures - those things were nasty.

tj444 -> RE: When you were a teenager.... (1/16/2014 8:18:18 AM)

My father had a thick leather strap hanging on the wall.. a visual deterrent.. he rarely used it..

I remember one time when I was a young teenager (or near that).. my mother wanted to spank me over something but rather than take it, I ran outside and we danced around the car.. me using the car as a barrier so she couldn't catch me.. I thought it was funny and I started laughing.. which made her laugh.. to save face she threatened that she would spank me later.. but she never did bother to try again.. [:D]

But seriously, I grew up on a farm, how much trouble could us kids get into???
