I have been wanting clear frames for a while. You know [like this].
It would be a splurge but I haven't had new glasses in four years and it would be nice to have a change.

That said? I know my own self. I don't clean my glasses regularly, or even put them in their case. They always end up gunked up with something or other.

My concern is, if I buy clear frames, will the mess be that much more obvious?
Will the clear plastic tarnish in the same fashion that nose pads often do?

I'm not going to spring for something that will look like the inside of a greenhouse after three months.

If you aren't one to clean your glasses, I would not reccomend clear frames. They will show all the same mess your lenses would, plus possibly more as you tend to touch your lenses throughout the day.

The yellowing of the nose pads is caused by the secretion of body oils and UV light from the sun. The nose pads are typically made of some type of pliable plastic material. Better made ones are made of silicone and are less likely to stain. The cheaper variety tends to stain more.

That said, the frame material is made from a hard plastic. In this case I would not worry about body oil contamination staining the frames. I would worry about UV light. I would specifically ask where you buy your glasses from about the yellowing overtime. I would find out who the frame manufacturer is and ask the manufacturer. Most companies put UV inhibitors into the plastic resin. If made with UV inhibitors I would not expect them to yellow.

Jinger I don't know what your prescription is like, but when I had glasses pre-eye surgery, they had thick lenses that were beveled - they collected the gunk you mention along the edges at the crevice where the lenses fit into the frame. As you mention, it wasn't easy to see it there because all of my frames have been colored.

Mummyman mentions a great way to check on how the frames themselves might be prevented from yellowing, but even if you had some with UV inhibitors, I think they might still collect the gunk similar to window frames that surround clear window glass. That might be visible. Something to consider perhaps. I'm sure you could get an idea of what this might look like by looking at the frames you have now and seeing how much, and what is in there presently...

Jinger, I have 2 pairs of clear frame Rx glasses similar to what you describe. They are hard plastic without adjustable nose pads. I'm trying to get a pic off my phone without luck today.

I've had them about 4 years and haven't noticed any yellowing of the frames, or that they show much more of the grubby stuff. They're easily cleaned with drop of dish soap and tap water, or a household microfiber cloth from the dollar store.

If you're worried about the frames changing, how about rimless glasses instead? I have several pairs of those with the arms clear plastic and they've been great...they practically disappear on your face.

I've used http://www.zennioptical.com/ for about 8 pairs over the years. They make single-vision Rx glasses starting at $6.95 including frames, lenses, case, cleaning cloth + a couple bucks for shipping. I've always received them in less than 3 weeks. My favorite pair are progressives, rimless, anti-reflection coated in clear plastic frames...for under $50.

Once, I accidentally broke a temple arm while using way too much force on an adjustment (lenses were fine). I told Zenni what happened, taking full blame, and asked if they would sell me a duplicate frame. They looked up my order, said the glasses were still under warranty, and shipped me out another frame at $0 cost, $0 shipping.

They also have a great feature on their website where you can upload your face pic and have a virtual 'try-on' of any frames they sell. I have nothing but good things to say about them.
