According to what I have read, the last time those tanks were inspected was 1991.

I'm right here in the middle of the red zone, no water yet, and with four cases of water stocked back for cooking, washing, brushing teeth, etc. There is no showering or washing clothes still, and any attempt to turn on the tap fills the house with a pungent odor so strong it'll take your breath away.

Those tanks are decades old, and the site was in use at its present location long before anyone ever thought about whether or not it would be a bad thing to have such a facility upriver from the water treatment plant, because in those days their were no such contaminants in use that were stored there, or at least the tanks then were new and structurally sound.

The EPA around here is a joke. It has been a long suspicion that all the coal barons have to do is to funnel enough cash into someone's pocket and things get ignored and reports get falsified. Eventually things like this happen. The coal barons are poisoning our water, our land, our air, and the fruits of our state become profits for out-of-state companies that never reinvest in Appalachia or even worry about our safety. We've had two huge mining disasters in the last seven years that illustrated how much concern the barons have for us, which is none at all, and the State officials will rush things along to maintain the status quo even if it continues to put our people in jeopardy.

If the EPA did its job around here this wouldn't have ever happened.

Big Government (FEMA) has delivered over one million liters of water to W. Virginia.

The big business that created this mess has yet to deliver one drop of water.

Yeah... its government that's the problem. [8|]

I THINK cloudboy and you are saying the same thing. I read his title/OP as sarcasm.

Oh I know. I read it the same way. I wasn't intending to direct my sarcasm at him; but with him.

jlf1961 -> RE: The EPA hurts business and the average American (1/14/2014 3:56:33 PM)

I just checked there were a lot of famous people that came from west virginia, so I guess we kinda need to take this seriously.

The more coal mining the poorer a county gets.

joether -> RE: The EPA hurts business and the average American (1/15/2014 6:13:56 AM)

Question I have: How many of those people in the effected areas were or have been against the EPA even existing, letting alone do the job its suppose to do?

Those are the ones that should NEVER open their mouths to breath one ounce of a complaint. They put their words and actions to create the problem they now live in and have NO ONE to blame but themselves!

I'm quite compassionate. Just pointing out that those effected, whom did all they could to undermine the EPA ending up finding the error of their ways the hard way. While I feel sorry for their situation and hope its fixed as soon as possible. It doesn't escape the fact of reality. If it can happen to them, it can happen to someone else. If they don't like what happened, imagine how others will feel with a weaken EPA when disaster strikes in their area.

Do you have the foggiest understanding that the EPA has no responsibility for disaster relief?

mnottertail -> RE: The EPA hurts business and the average American (1/15/2014 7:44:04 AM)

Ja, that would be FEMA, who has stepped in and did an efficient and effective job where private freemarketers fear to tread, as per usual.

FelineRanger -> RE: The EPA hurts business and the average American (1/15/2014 8:32:36 AM)

In all this pious pontificating about whether or not the government should be more or less involved, one thing has been noticeably forgotten. Where is the question of personal responsibility? There is an employee, perhaps several employees at Freedom Industries whose job it is to inspect those tanks to ensure that they were intact. Forget whether or not the EPA is effective, why haven't those individuals and their employer been pursued for responsibility?

Tkman117 -> RE: The EPA hurts business and the average American (1/15/2014 9:26:19 AM)

FR

The EPA, much like Environment Canada, is given the purpose of maintaining Environmental Regulations and standards. The EPA or Environment Canada usually do inspections of various at risk facilities, and they also get involved when major shifts occur, such as selling and buying of property. It is up to the company to maintain their infrastructure or they get penalized for it, through court action, loss of subsidies, or increased taxes. The only reason why this system fails is because of corruption, which seems to be a major illness among the American people & it's elite. But also, there's a lot of problems with the regulations themselves. They don't open themselves up to new technology, and as a result, the standards are decades old. There's a lot of problems with the environmental regulations in both our countries, but to blame only one side and not both is immature and simply incorrect.

I'm willing to bet that Freedom Industries is going to be penalized for this, and the penalty will likely be commensurate with the infraction and results, as they should be.

The storage tank wasn't part of EPA regulation because it's just a storage facility and not a production facility. The difference? I don't know. Personally, I'm surprised that a storage facility for chemicals that could be dangerous isn't open for inspection and regulation by the EPA. Regardless, the facility should have inspection processes to prevent this kind of thing. That there hasn't been any charges levied against Freedom Industries yet simply means that efforts are focusing on cleanup at the moment, not that there won't be any charges. I haven't read anything about exactly what happened, leading to the spill. That shows me that prosecutors aren't just knee-jerk reacting and will bring forward charges that will fit the "crime."

Tkman117 -> RE: The EPA hurts business and the average American (1/15/2014 12:34:27 PM)

Very well said, and I agree, if the EPA is going to inspect facilities with dangerous chemicals, why discriminate between production and storage? The threat is still there no matter where the chemicals are or what process they are undergoing.
