I hear this said quite a bit.........and it admitedly makes me smile-about people doing things they don't neccesarily want to. Even though we all do, at times.

I think the concept of fairness, that life should be fair, is taught and it may be somewhat of a disservice to attitudes, overall.

I was told this once-but I lost faith in the idea when we moved away-I turned 9-and never saw that playground monitor again.

So,should it always be fair?

Or is it better to just do what you agree to-even if it hurts?

You'd think you might here '' Suck it up'' in the gym, but I never hear it used. What I do hear alot  is : ''Push Push! It's all you!''

LMAO!

"Suck it up"
"Quit yer belly achin"
"Don't whine"
"Quitcherbitchin"
"Get a life"
"Get over yourself"

Kinda all mean the same thing, don't they?

I think we are measured by whether or not we keep our word.

Even though we should keep our word and endeavor to be a fair person in all that we do that doesn't mean life is fair, life isn't fair. My parents drummed this into my head repeatedly because I felt it should be. I still feel it should be fair.. but I acknowledge it isn't and that I only have my little minute part to play in it all, less than a grain of sand upon the beach when one looks at the big picture of time and space....

Just my thoughts.

For me it depends on the topic and what's been said already.

But sometimes, I do consider it an avoidance of discussing the issue, for the simple reason that the person who could discuss it:

1) Doesn't really want to do it

2) Doesn't know what to say

Which is okay, but I just usually say" I don't know what to say", or "can we talk about this later"? (of course, that's not always seen as "Domly/Masterly" I guess.

You know youare right Susan, when I was a teenager there were a few times I was told to more or less "suck it up" and it really hurt me because I was in pain... Once was when my father died, and another time was when my best friend moved away shortly after that. I think that sometimes people have difficulty dealing with another's sadness, hence they tell them to "suck it up" rather than being there for them and showing sympathy... some people just can't handle sad emotions being shown in front of them, especially tears.

Sometimes I feel sorry for my nephew, who is an only child. My sister is a good mom and all, and he is a great kid. On her kitchen wall, she has two plaques.

One reads: "Save time. Do it my way."
The other says: "No Whining!"

I'll bet her husband and her son think twice before whining or questioning her. I think she is a secret Domme (she's make a good one). Not that Dommes necessarily say things like: "Suck it up!" (I've heard that more from male Doms, and sometimes it has been, in my humble opinion, justified).

She just is a real take-charge type of gal. They rarely argue with her, and there might be things they would have liked to discuss with her, I am thinking, that may have been important, that they have not, due to that attitude. I do love her, btw, and we get along quite well (I am submissive, for the most part, I go along to get along).

fast reply:

"Life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths.
It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transend it.
Once we truly know that life is difficult - once we truly understand and accept it - then life is no longer difficult. Because once it is accepted,
the fact that life is difficult no longer matters.
Most do not fully se this truth that life is difficult. Istead they moan more or less incesantly, noisily andsubtly, about the enormity of their problems, their burdens, and their difficulties as if life were generally easy, as if life should be easy."
The above is a qoute from M. Scott Peck. this is the opening words to the first chapter of a popular book in the 80's: The Road Less Traveled. I rememeber reading this at a particularly turmultous period in my life and it just slapped me in the face. I rememebr thinking.. .. how freaking true.. where did I learn that this life was suppose to be a nice fun smooth ride.   I got many good lessons from that book.

Susan, Julia.... have the two of you considered that there's a third reason that people say that as well, in the type of situations that you mentioned?  Like, perhaps, we honestly think that's what the person should do?

Even in the worst of times and circumstances - life goes on.  It does no one a bit of good to sit about contemplating what's Wrong rather than actively working to make things Right or at least Better.
